Good afternoon, my reader. In indoor floriculture, a delicate violet with a variety of shades is considered one of the most popular plants. It can be propagated in various ways, including using leaves.

Leaves selection

The further successful cultivation of indoor violets depends on the correct selection of a leaf plate serving as a planting material.

The plant must be healthy, with no signs of disease or pests. Do not take old leaves located in the lower sector of the rosette, as they develop for a long time.

It is impossible to cut out leaf plates near the center of the rosette, as there is a risk of damage to it, which negatively affects the further development of the flower.

Resilient healthy leaves are selected for propagation from the second or third row, counting from the bottom of the rosette. Sheet plates should have a characteristic color without spots, dents, scratches.

If the planting material received by mail or purchased in the store loses its elasticity, it is soaked for 5-7 hours in a light pink solution of potassium permanganate, and then dried.

How to cut a leaf

It is impossible to tear off the leaf chosen for the reproduction of the violet from the plant and immediately plant it for rooting. When preparing the cutting, several rules are observed:

  • The sharp blade of the knife is treated with alcohol.
  • Lay the leaf plate separated from the plant on a wooden or plastic hard surface.
  • Make a cut on the petiole with one sharp movement of the blade, observing an inclination of 45 degrees. The length of the leg is left in the range of 30-50 mm, depending on the size of the container in which further rooting will take place.
  • Sprinkle the cut with activated carbon crushed into powder.

If there is no disinfected instrument, you can break off a rather fragile petiole, leaving the desired length. Leave for a while to dry out the wound.

Leaf propagation in water

The most accessible method for home breeding of violets is considered to be the method of rooting a leaf plate in water.

Use a tinted glass jar. The cooled boiled water is poured in, in which the activated carbon tablet ground to a powder state is stirred.

The leaf petiole is immersed 10 mm. The liquid is constantly added, controlling its constant level. For transplantation, leaves are used with the length of the formed roots over one centimeter.

The disadvantages of this method include the possibility of rotting of the cut. It is necessary to immediately remove the damaged area and place the sheet plate in a fresh portion of activated carbon water.

When transplanting rooted leaves, it is important not to deeply deepen the petiole. The soil around is slightly compacted, sprayed with settled water. A transparent film is stretched over the mini-greenhouse, which is removed when young foliage is formed.

Leaf propagation in soil

It is convenient to use plastic cups as planting containers, in which several holes are made at the bottom.

Drainage is laid (small pebbles, foam fragments) with a maximum thickness of 20 mm. Loose soil is poured, leaving 2-3 cm of free space on top.

A deepening is made and the stalk is placed, slightly tamping the soil, so that the leaf is tilted within 30-45 degrees. A match or a toothpick is installed from below, which will not allow the sheet plate to touch the ground.

To create a greenhouse effect, stretch the film on top. They keep the greenhouse in a well-lit warm room. Ventilate it daily and, if necessary, moisten the substrate. The seedlings will be ready for transplanting when fresh leaves have developed at least 30 mm in diameter.

Reproduction from leaf fragments

A similar method is used if rare varieties are propagated in the presence of a small amount of material or when a leaf plate rooted in water is rotting.

The affected part is cut off, and the sheet is cut with a sharp knife into several parts. Each fragment should have one or more veins. You can cut off 1/3 of the top from the leaf along the horizontal line.

The fragments are kept for several minutes to lightly dry the sections, which are then sprinkled with powdered activated carbon. They are placed in a dish with soil so that the cut touches the ground tightly. Stretch the film. With this method, children are formed from the veins, so their number can be quite large.

Creating conditions for violets

Violet is able to decorate any interior, thanks to long-term abundant flowering, provided that suitable conditions are created:

  • breathable fertile light soil;
  • indoor temperature in the range from 22 to 26 degrees;
  • regular watering with settled water;
  • the minimum duration of daylight hours is 12 hours;
  • sufficiently high ambient humidity.
When growing violets, it is imperative to master the various methods of propagation of this charming flower.
