Flower description

In the natural environment, these are annual and perennial herbaceous plants with a different shape of the root system (rhizome, tuber). At home, out of the existing 1600 species, tuberous begonia is grown - a plant with simple, and more often double flowers.

Dark green leaves and buds of various colors give a decorative effect to the dense crown. In most species with large double flowers, the height of the bush does not exceed 25-30 cm. Single buds or buds collected in inflorescences reach 5-7 cm in diameter.

Landing

The correct development of the plant, the abundant formation of buds, and the duration of flowering depend on this procedure. The best time for this event is from January to the end of March.

Begonia tubers are placed in a moistened peat tablet with the rounded side and outward with the concave side. You can use loose, fertile soil rich in humus. In such an environment, the root of the plant will receive the nutrients necessary for development.

The container with the tuber is placed where there is sufficient lighting and the air temperature does not drop below 20 ° C. Soil moisture is maintained with a spray bottle - excess water leads to root rot. To speed up the process, the planting container is covered with glass or plastic, not forgetting to periodically air the mini-greenhouse.

After 3-4 weeks, when 2-3 leaves appear, the begonia is transplanted to a permanent place. To do this, choose a small pot equipped with drainage. The soil is purchased in a store or prepared independently from equal parts of sod land, humus and vermiculite. The tubers are buried into the soil by no more than 2-3 cm.

Care

An exotic plant needs diffused lighting. It is not necessary to put the flowerpot on the windowsill. It is enough to place it near the window so that there is enough light, and direct sunlight does not fall on the begonia crown.

During the growing season, the flower needs moderate watering as the top layer of the earth dries up by 1-2 cm. The plant reacts negatively to excess water. Tuber decay begins, and prerequisites for fungal infections appear.

Important! Begonias are watered exclusively at the root, moisture should not get on the crown.

At the beginning of the growing season, a young plant needs a nitrogen-containing fertilizer for the full development of the crown. During the period of bud formation and flowering, the plant is fed with a mineral complex containing phosphorus and potassium.

In winter, begonias require rest - they stop not only feeding, but also watering.

Reproduction

Breeding begonias is possible with seeds or tubers. At home, the second method is usually used. Depending on the size of the tuber and the number of dormant buds on it, it can be divided into several parts. This method is used when they want to get not one, but several plants.

Tuberous begonias do not belong to unpretentious flowers, you will have to tinker with them. But the elegant bushes, strewn with terry buds, compensate for all the efforts and costs.
