Low-growing flowers: how to choose them for a flower bed

  • Dec 13, 2020

Good afternoon, my reader. To decorate a multi-tiered flower bed beautifully, you need flowers that will certainly not grow tall and will not shade other plants. What can be used for landscaping?

Low-growing annuals

Annuals less than 35 cm tall are an excellent choice for those who like to experiment and change the pattern of the flower bed every year. In addition, these flowers do not require complex maintenance.

The main point when choosing them is the timing of flowering. There are three groups of annuals:

  • Blooming until the end of autumn - asters, calendula, etc.
  • Blooming in May - marigolds, cornflowers, etc.
  • Early flowering plants - petunia, begonia, etc.

Most popular plants:

  • Ageratum. Creates beautiful "carpets" on alpine slides and flower beds. Loves sunny areas.
  • instagram viewer
  • Lobelia is short. Blooms all summer, decorating the flower bed. It can grow both in partial shade and in the sun.
  • Petunia. Great for plots, as well as for loggias or balconies. Blooms until cold weather.
  • Marigold. Small compact shrubs. They love shading, but they are not afraid of the direct sun.

Stunted biennials

These plants are hardy and do not need to be dug out for the winter. But during cold weather it is better to insulate them. They are convenient because you don't have to think about seedlings or seeds for two years.

Plants of this type include:

  • Pansies. They love the sun, but they can withstand the shade. They need abundant watering.
  • Carnation. With good watering, it blooms for at least 4 months.
  • Forest forget-me-not. It blooms from May to September with beautiful blue buds.
  • Adonis. Yellow and light flower, flaunting until autumn.
  • Daisy. It blooms short (from early June to late July), but very beautiful.
  • Night violet. A beautiful flower with a very delicate and pleasant scent that blooms in the dark. Loves moist soil and shaded areas.

Stunted perennials

These plants are able to delight the owner for several years in a row. From them you can create compositions that will last for years.

There are many types of such flowers, but the following are worth highlighting:

  • Kamenka, she is sea alyssum. Withstands frosts up to -11 degrees without shelter, blooms with thick yellow, white or pink inflorescences.
  • Oak sage. Suitable for any area, pleasing to the eye from spring to cold weather.
  • Phlox. They bloom for almost 6 months and do not need any special care.
  • Chamomile (feverfew, matrix). It blooms all summer, if you cut off the stems with fallen flowers in time.
  • The arenaria is crimson. It looks like a carnation, it has deep purple flowers. Blooms from July to October. Loves sandy soil.

How to choose a flower bed for undersized flowers

In order for low plants to please the grower with their appearance, it is required to follow several simple rules:

  • Plant nearby plants that require similar growth conditions. So, say, a night violet and pansies will be uncomfortable together - and one of them will not bloom.
  • Biennials and perennials should be fenced off with decorative barriers made of stone or other improvised material so that they do not spread throughout the flower bed and strangle annuals.
  • Flowers are not worth replanting. Better to pick the right place right away.
  • Top dressing should be moderate in nitrogen. "Overfeeding" with nitrate or organic matter will lead to the growth of green mass, and the flowering will be frail.
  • Soil moisture standards must be strictly observed.
  • In order for something to bloom constantly on the flower bed, observe the planting schedule, taking into account the growing season of each plant.
  • Do not forget to weed and treat the flower bed from pests.
  • Diseased and dried plants must be removed.

Combination options

How exactly to combine plants depends on the conditions on the site, the imagination and capabilities of the grower. Here are just a few tips:

  • Flowers should not clutter each other.
  • The color of the flowers must be compatible with each other.
  • If you don't know what to plant, plant cornflowers and marigolds. They are versatile and always look good. Petunia is also not bad - it goes with anything.
  • It makes sense to grow night violets or chrysanthemums in decorative pots. Petunia and a stove are also suitable.
To summarize, we can say: don't be afraid to experiment! The main thing is that the flower bed pleases your eyes. All other rules are secondary.
