Good afternoon, my reader. Siderata have long been used by gardeners. They appreciated the effectiveness and simplicity of this herbal fertilizer. And already in many household plots, you can see pieces of land under the green manure.

And that's why gardeners love these plants so much:
- Enrich the land with nitrogen.
- Improves water and air permeability of the soil.
- The number of weeds is reduced.
- The development of pathogenic bacteria and fungi is reduced.
- The earth is saturated with useful elements.
Siderata are planted during spring, summer and even autumn. But the question arises when and how they should be embedded in the soil. Let's consider these questions.
When to close up green manure
The time of planting green manures and embedding them in the soil depends on the purpose for which they are used.
In early spring
For early spring planting, siderates are chosen that can grow green mass in a short time, these are mustard, oats, phacelia, peas, radish, alfalfa, seradella. They are sown very early, so that half a month before the planting of the main type of green manure, it can be embedded in the ground. Most often, this happens even before flowering. But you can leave a small area with flowering plants, they will attract pollinating insects. But don't forget to dig up this part before the seeds appear.
Siderata, planted in the spring between the rows of the main crop, act as protection from wind, weeds, insects and strengthen the soil. But make sure they don't outgrow the main plants, stunting them.
In summer and early autumn
After harvesting the main crop, siderates from the Cruciferous family are planted: radish, turnip, rapeseed, mustard, and also peas, phacelia and buckwheat. They enrich the soil and endow it with valuable trace elements.
Beautiful photos with young sprouts of legumes. Such siderates are mowed and dug up from the ground when they have grown enough greenery, but have not yet had time to seed. To accelerate the maturation of green fertilizer, the remains of vegetation are watered with special preparations.
Late autumn
To prepare the soil for the upcoming summer cottage season, cereals, clover, phacelia, vetch are planted at the very end of autumn. Such crops, before the onset of winter cold weather, have time to build up the root system, and in early spring, greens. Two weeks before digging the earth, the siderates are mowed and left on the surface of the soil, which will help the roots decompose faster.
Rape, radish and mustard are also planted before winter. After the natural cold kills the plant, it creates a kind of blanket for the future garden bed and protects it from complete freezing.
How to embed green manure in the ground
Previously, it was advised to dig deeply the green manure into the soil, but now this is not recommended. Deeply buried green plants close the access to external moisture, the top layer of the earth first erodes, then dries up and creates an obstacle to the entry of air. Because of this, siderates do not decompose correctly, but sour. In addition, deep digging violates the top fertile soil layer.
It is considered the norm when fertilizer plants are embedded in the soil to a depth of no more than 10 cm. For this, flat cutters or other tools are used. With such an embedding, siderates decompose correctly, giving their usefulness to the soil, and remaining at the top, they become mulch.
Green manure plants have become the gardener's main helpers in improving the land. Therefore, planting and embedding them is planned as carefully as the cultivation of the main crops.
