The garter of cucumbers can significantly increase the yield. If the shoots are left to creep along the soil surface, then, in contact with wet soil, the greens can begin to rot. In addition, the number of ovaries will be greatly reduced.

Garter on open beds

Advantages of the procedure:

  • it is easier for bees and other flying insects to get to the inflorescences and pollinate them;
  • it becomes easier to remove weeds from the garden and loosen the soil around the plantings;
  • the process of watering and root feeding is facilitated;
  • plants are well lit and ventilated from all sides;
  • the risk of developing fungal infections is reduced;
  • ripe fruits can be picked quickly and easily.

On open soil, there are 2 options for garters: vertical and horizontal. Even an inexperienced gardener can handle the latter. First, you need to prepare 4 iron or wooden pegs 1-1.2 m high. You will also need twine or a strong rope. If necessary, they can be replaced with ribbons made of thin linen made with your own hands from old sheets or clothes.

Stakes are driven in along the edges of the beds. They should be placed parallel to each other. Then 0.3 m is measured from the surface of the earth and the first rope is pulled. Its ends are fixed on pegs driven into the soil. Then 0.25 cm still recede and the tape is pulled again. So you can continue to the very top.

When using this method, it is necessary to periodically redirect the antennae of those bushes that have reached the top and are beginning to shade the lower rows.

Vertical supports are popular with most gardeners. For the garter of cucumbers, stakes are also driven in at the edges of the beds first. Thick twine or metal wire is pulled over their tops. It should be parallel to the ground surface. Already to this wire, cloth tapes are tied at a distance of 0.2-0.25 m from each other.

The vertical supports are attached only at the top. Their bottom should fall freely to the very soil, where it becomes attached to the main shoot. Gradually, the cucumbers will grab them with antennae and pull them up, rising up. The number of vertical supports should correspond to the number of planted plants.

Sometimes gardeners practice placing another row of ribbons on existing stakes. In this case, a distance of 0.30-0.35 m must be left between the supports.

The use of a net for tying bushes allows you to combine both options. As a structure, a fence with large cells, lattices are used, or a finished product is purchased from durable propylene threads. Stretch the mesh between the columns driven into the soil. If the plantings occupy a rather large area, the number of supports for fixing the product will have to be increased. Otherwise, the net will sag under the weight of the shoots with fruits.

Fixation in the greenhouse

In greenhouses, standard garter methods are allowed, but most often combined options are used here, which are distinguished by their compactness. Small structures allow you to free up space in the greenhouse for growing other crops.

The most commonly used garter is the English letter V. It allows you to separate the shoots and prevents them from tightly intertwining. With this method, the plant is well illuminated from all sides, and mycoses develop quite rarely. The twine is tied to the top of the base of the greenhouse, its ends are lowered to the bushes and their base is tied. The main shoot is launched along one rope, and the strongest side branch along the other.

Another common option is blinding. First, the rope is pulled at a distance of 0.5 m from the ground surface. Then all the main shoots are tied under the 2 bottom sheet. All branches that grow above the 0.5 m border are cut off. This option allows you to control the growth of the crown and direct all the forces of the plantations to the formation of ovaries and ripening of fruits.
