American, or ash-leaved, maple is a tree that is a problem for many summer residents. It multiplies rapidly (due to self-seeding) and grows, and can also damage health or outbuildings, since it has a fragile wood structure. To get rid of the maple on the site, you must choose a method to combat the crop and fulfill all the conditions for its destruction.

Physical method for removing maple
The mechanical, or physical, method involves the use of such tools:
- shovel;
- saw;
- scrap;
- ax, etc.
The mechanical method is considered the most economical (if you get rid of the trees yourself), but a laborious process. For these reasons, this method is well suited for areas with few trees.
In order to get rid of unwanted vegetation on the site as quickly and with minimal physical costs as possible, you should adhere to the following course of work:
- Cut down most of the tree, but leave about 2 m of the trunk. The latter will serve as a lever.
- Dig in the root zone. If the tree is large, then the radius of excavation is about 2 m.
- The horizontal roots that extend from the central trunk must be removed. At this stage of the work, an ax is used.
- The central trunk is cut from all sides. The cuts should be made as close to the ground as possible. To remove the taproot as deeply as possible (break it off), they begin to swing and rotate the stump trunk around its axis.
If the site is dominated by sandy or clayey soil, in order to get as best as possible to root, you should partially excavate the earth around the trunk, and then wash part of it with a jet of water (strong pressure).
After mechanical removal of the tree, it is necessary to observe the area on which the maple was located within 2 years, since in most cases overgrowth appears. In order to prevent the tree from growing again in the area from those roots that remain in the ground, all emerging shoots should be destroyed.
Agrotechnical techniques and the use of chemicals
If trees were previously uprooted on the site, but now shoots appear or maple has scattered, not yet having had time to form powerful trunks, you can try to fight the plant by mulching. This method involves digging up the soil and then covering it with a dark cloth or polyethylene. Every 2-3 weeks, the mulch should be lifted and, if new growth appears, remove it mechanically.
Using a herbicide such as Roundup or Hurricane will not be effective in all cases. In order for the chemical composition to give the desired result, you should adhere to the following recommendations:
- To treat small maple, use a solution that is prepared in a 1: 1 ratio (water and substance). Spray the solution over the entire surface of the tree (including the undergrowth that appears near the central trunk).
- After cutting a large maple, immediately apply the herbicide to the cut site (with a brush).
- Drill several holes at the bottom of the maple tree and inject undiluted herbicide into them (with a syringe).
Burning maple stumps for a long time and is impractical, since they contain a lot of moisture.
