Why cover a hydrangea

Hydrangea is a very popular flower in the garden. More than 70 species, unpretentiousness, frost resistance, abundant flowering - all these qualities attract gardeners and ensure constant popularity.

The main chores are associated with covering the plant for the winter. The number and sequence of actions depends on the climate in a particular region. The most resistant to cold weather is panicle hydrangea. It can withstand very low temperatures, down to -35 degrees. This is not surprising, because its natural habitat is Sakhalin.

In order for the panicle hydrangea to survive the winter comfortably, it is enough to cover its root system. And then, you need to do this only in very harsh winters. The stems of this hydrangea almost never freeze, and new flower buds are formed later on young shoots.

Treelike also tolerates cold well. However, for the winter it must be protected entirely, otherwise the young shoots will die. But even this will not disrupt the flowering regime, but it will begin a little later, in the spring it will take time for new buds and shoots to form.

Large-leaved hydrangea is the most popular, but also the most thermophilic. It overwinters well in warm regions, you don't even need to cover it. But if you live in northern regions where winters are cold and snowy, the plant needs to be completely wrapped.

Shelter from the cold

  • Paniculate and treelike do not need full cover. The bushes can simply be spud, dry leaves can be thrown over the trunk and spruce branches can be laid.
  • One-year-old flowers must be carefully insulated so that they survive the winter without problems. Cover the trunk with dry soil, if the soil is wet, then mix it with dry soil and cover the roots.
  • Next, install one and a half meter boards around the bushes, carefully bend the shoots, put them in a bundle and fix the structure.
  • Use Lutrasil or Spunbond 30 for cover.
  • Another very popular hiding place is air dry. The flower bush is tied and wrapped with frost-resistant material ("Lutrasil" or "Spunbond 30"). Then a metal mesh frame is installed around and filled with dry leaves to a height of 10 cm. And from above, the entire structure must be wrapped in film.
