Ways to cover roses for the winter

Each florist chooses the timing of insulation empirically. But when the temperature drops to -5 ° C, it is necessary to take up the covering process. It is optimal to carry out this procedure in the afternoon.

The choice of insulation is one of the important aspects of creating a comfortable wintering for shrubs.

IMPORTANT! Moss, manure, sawdust of deciduous trees, dry leaves, grass, straw cannot be used as insulation.

Warming with covering material

Spunbond and Lutrasil are the best types of covering material for the purposes in question. Lutrasil has several varieties of density. You need to choose the most dense one.

The whole process of covering a shrub with a nonwoven material consists of the following steps:

  • Pruning leaves and diseased shoots on all bushes. Prune with a sharp knife or pruner so as not to damage the bark on the stem.
  • Standard varieties require the installation of a low frame above them in the form of wire arcs at the same distance from each other. The entire frame is covered with a covering material, its edges are securely fixed around the entire perimeter.
  • In weaving varieties, the base of the bush must be covered with a mixture of dry rotted compost with sand, in a ratio of 50 to 50.
  • The lashes are laid on a spruce or oak substrate. The essential oils of these plants prevent mold from forming and killing buds.
  • The laid branches are fixed with wire bent into arcs or special pins.
  • Installation of the frame structure, as in item 2.
  • Throw all the insulation with a lot of spruce branches or oak leaves.

With the arrival of snow, the entire structure can be additionally protected from frost. To do this, the snow is thrown on top of a spruce branches or an oak leaf.

The roses are released in the spring as soon as a stable above-zero temperature is established. First of all, the leaves and spruce branches are removed, then the lutrasil or spunbond is opened for a while.

ATTENTION! So that weakened rose bushes do not suffer from the sun's rays, they open them on a cloudy day, without precipitation.

A mound of sand and compost at the base of the bush is raked after the soil has completely thawed.

After opening the roses completely and releasing their climbing branches, the bushes and the ground around them are sprayed with a 3% solution of Bordeaux mixture. This procedure will help disinfect the shoots and soil from infections. The soil around each plant requires cleaning of debris: dried spruce branches, leaves, grass.

Shield shelter

If there is additional space around the bushes, it becomes possible to install a solid roof of wooden shields over the roses. To do this, they are placed in a house and knocked together to give strength.

This method of warming will not only reliably protect the bushes from frost, but also solve the issue of saving roses from wet winters.

The process of warming with shields begins at the beginning of autumn and proceeds according to the following plan:

  • Shortening the stem to the desired length (depending on the type of rose).
  • Pruning foliage and unhealthy branches.
  • Cover the base of the bush with dry earth or dried coniferous sawdust.
  • Install a house of shields over the bushes. Its edges should be at a distance of 15-20 cm from the root area.
  • Dig grooves in the ground near the shields for drainage and water drainage.
  • Cover the entire structure of the boards with a waterproof material and fix it on the boards with a stapler or nails.
  • The ends of the house remain open. Such ventilation will not allow the soil to become damp.
  • Cover the ground around the bush under the house with dry coniferous sawdust. They will absorb water. Change if necessary.
  • Closer to the arrival of frost, you need to choose a day when the soil and bush under the house will be dry. Close the ends with shields and cover the whole house with insulation.

In the spring, when all the snow has melted, the insulation is removed from the panel structure, and one side of the house is completely disassembled. This allows the roses to receive fresh air and indirect sunlight.

Warming with sawdust

With this method of sheltering roses for the winter, be sure to sprinkle the bases of the bushes with dry earth. The height of the earthen hills should not be higher than 10 cm for low-growing varieties and 40 cm for tall ones. Insulation works are carried out in the following order:

  • Pruning leaves and diseased shoots.
  • Tie curly varieties in one armful with wide fabric stripes.
  • Lay the tied branches on the ground, covered with dense polyethylene or roofing felt.
  • Cover the bushes with spruce branches and cover with dry coniferous sawdust. The height of the sawdust embankment must be at least 40 cm.
  • The entire embankment is covered with a film or roofing material, which are carefully fixed at the edges.

When the spring melting of snow begins, it is necessary to remove the film and pierce the entire embankment with a thick rod. Through the holes obtained, air will flow to the bushes. At night, it is still important to cover sawdust with roofing material or film.

As soon as a stable positive temperature is established, the sawdust and part of the spruce branches are carefully removed. The remaining spruce branches are positioned so that they protect the weakened roses from direct sunlight.

Preparing roses for the winter

The biggest mistake of flower growers in Siberia is covering roses without creating the necessary conditions to slow down the growing season. Preparation should begin in early August. It consists of the following stages:

  • Stop watering and loosening the soil.
  • Refusal from nitrogen fertilizers.
  • Pruning all flowers and buds. You can leave a couple of inflorescences for the formation of fruits.
  • Do not start insulation until the thermometer mark -5 ° C. Hardening the rose at a temperature of -3-4 ° C will force it to build up a denser bark, which will make it easier to survive the winter frosts.
In order to survive in Siberia in winter, roses need not only high-quality shelter, but also good health. To do this, in the spring and summer period, it is necessary to strictly follow all the rules for caring for prickly beauties.
