Good afternoon, my reader. Most often, parts of the drainage system are deformed during the winter. Winter thaws and subsequent frosts cause ice to form and thaw several times. If there is too much of it, the bindings do not hold up and break or unbend. As a result, the drain is deformed, or one of its parts is completely destroyed. This can be avoided only by applying the correct installation, consisting of several stages.

Stage one - fastening the brackets
First of all, a bracket is installed, the location of which is on the side opposite to the location of the drain pipe. The advancement of water will ensure the slope of the gutter, it is easy to get it, it is enough to install the first bracket slightly higher than the others.
The installation is carried out with the condition that water flowing from the roof enters it, but at the same time the chute should not be in the path of the snow convergence in order to avoid deformation. The gutter, laid on the brackets, must be 3 cm below the roof level. This will help prevent snow from falling from the roof into it.
Stage two - slope of the gutter
The free movement of water along the gutter to the downpipe provides a slope of the gutter equal to 3 mm per 1 m.This is easily calculated if the width of the roof slope is 10 m, then the slope of the gutter from the first bracket to the funnel of the downpipe should be 30 mm, that is, 3 cm.
The attachment point of the bottom bracket can be easily determined using the water level. A construction thread is stretched between the first and last brackets, along which the entire row of brackets is attached, at a distance of no more than 50 cm from each other. The greater distance between the brackets will lead to the fact that the entire drainage system will not withstand the spring melting of snow and collapse.
Stage three - fastening the brackets
The brackets can be attached in different ways:
- Metal holders are attached to the rafters, but only before the roof is laid.
- Plastic or metal holders are attached to the wind board when the roof is already laid.
In the second case, it is necessary to make sure that the wind board is nailed evenly in order to exclude any deviation of the drainage system, which will eventually lead to its destruction.
IMPORTANT! Mounted on the roof, snow guards will protect the entire drain from snow melting.
General recommendations
- A metal gutter system, stronger than a plastic one, and easier to endure periods of icing - this point must be taken into account when choosing.
- The gutters are no more than 3 m long. Their connection is carried out using special elements. The location of the brackets must not overlap with the joints.
- The plastic drain is cut with a grinder or a hacksaw, the places of the cut are cleaned with a file. The metal gutter is cut with special scissors for metal, be sure to paint over the cut points with paint.
- The gutter is started from the funnel. After fixing the gutter, plugs, connectors, and a receiving funnel are installed.
- Installation of pipes is also carried out from the funnel. The pipes are attached to the funnel through the elbow. They are attached to the wall using clamps. The first clamp is placed immediately under the funnel, the next at a distance of 1.5 meters.
The strength and durability of the drainage system depends not only on the materials from which it is created, but also on the correct installation of the entire system as a whole and each of its parts separately.
Do you know how to save gutter systems from winter misfortunes using proper installation?
