There is no place for old people here: why the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia will in no way give up the obsolete PM

The Makarov pistol is one of the symbols of the Soviet militia. It has been in service with the PM since 1951, and it is quite obvious that this weapon has long been obsolete. Over the past half century, a large number of new, much more successful models have been invented. This raises the question: why is the Makarov pistol still used in the law enforcement agencies of the countries of the former Soviet Union?

The Makarov pistol has become a shining example of the weaponry of its era. A simple, cheap and fairly reliable pistol fully corresponded to the then demands of the Soviet army and police. In law enforcement, the PM replaced the TT and Nagant revolvers, which were massively used even before the war. The 9x18 mm cartridge was the ideal solution for the police. Against an unprotected target, he had a sufficient stopping effect, while being safe in matters of "through departure" and ricochet.

An important innovation of the PM in the 1950s was the presence of a fuse, which was not on the TT pistols. Another important innovation of Makarov was the store latch. Thanks to her, there was virtually no risk of losing the store.

PM became obsolete in the 1970s, when the production and mass use of the progressive material - kevlar - began. The military, police officers, and also representatives of organized crime received bullet-proof vests of a new level.

Since the pistol could not cope with body armor, they decided to completely abandon it in the army. In the armed forces, the PM was replaced by the SPS, the Yarygin pistol, the GSh-18. They also abandoned the Makarovs in the state security agencies. After the collapse of the USSR, PM was written off to the FSB, FSIN, OMON. Nevertheless, to this day, the Makarov pistol remains the main weapon of the police.

Why is it so? Yes, because PM is completely suitable for its purposes. An “ordinary” policeman in 9.5 out of 10 cases does not encounter well-protected militants. And when this happens, the "cavalry" enters the case in the form of special units. Therefore, today it is unprofitable to re-equip investigators, guards and traffic police officers. In addition, PM is by far the lightest domestic pistol, which is important in the context of wearing it throughout the whole working day.

Do not forget that rearmament is always a very expensive process. It's not enough just to buy new pistols. Replacing the pistol will mean replacing the old holster. You will also have to purchase spare parts to repair weapons.

Separately, it should be noted that PM is not the most ancient "dinosaur" in the arms market. Suffice it to recall the American Colt 1911, which, as you might guess, has been used in the United States since 1911! Of course, the weapon was modernized several times. In 1986, he was still abandoned at the official level, however, many intelligence officers, officers and soldiers use personal 1911s, acquired privately, in the service.

Weapons always attract boys. If you want to know something else interesting about the domestic arsenal, then you should look at how the drum magazine of the famous PPSh-41 assault rifle is equipped. It should be noted that this process is not the easiest one.
