Even those who did not live in the USSR must have heard that there were such fur hats from a fawn. They were also worn by members of the Politburo. The thing is extremely cool: warm, comfortable, beautiful. A real symbol of its era! I just want to ask you separately, what is this "fawn"? Beast, bird, fish? From whom exactly the famous Soviet hats were made.
“Zaiden treyden dine zuinen tsar and the grand duke Ivan Vasilyevich ussa russa!” - said in his address to the Russian tsar a character of one well-known Soviet command. Today Russia is the heiress of the "Evil Empire" with vodka, bears and balalaika, which is known in one way or another all over the world. And in ancient times for the entire "civilized" world, Russia was a mysterious place where some strange bearded men lived and from where wax for the production of candles and furs was stably supplied. What is it all about? And to the fact that today we will talk about this very furs.
A fawn hat is a fur hat. A “fawn” is a reindeer calf under one month old in a broad sense. In a narrow sense, a fawn is called a calf's fur itself. The production of this material in our time is carried out in accordance with GOST 11026-64. Reindeer are bred in special farms, after which they are slaughtered for fur, which goes to the first turn as a raw material for the light industry for the production of clothing, including luxury hats.

Since the beginning of the XXI century, the fashion for fur hats in the domestic open spaces has passed. But in the Soviet years, the situation was strictly the opposite, fur was very popular. And not only in the USSR. The most modest hat made of rabbit fur cost 10-20 rubles. Muskrat hat - 150-200 rubles. Mink hat - 200-300 rubles. The fawn was in the same price range, but it was difficult to get it, primarily not because of the price, but because of its rarity. Perhaps a similar hat in the USSR was not difficult to find in Leningrad, Moscow or Kiev, however, for example, in GUM Minsk there were no fawn hats on sale, unlike the same mink hats.

There were two interesting things about fur hats in the Soviet Union. First, they significantly reduced injuries in the winter by protecting the head during falls due to hunger. Secondly, such hats were a favorite prey for thieves, including street thieves. Particularly arrogant representatives of criminals could simply rip off the cap from their heads and run away. The thieves' technique with the theft of a headdress at the moment when a citizen was visiting a public toilet was very popular.
