Few people know that motorists actually owe the Wehrmacht the appearance of a modern canister with three handles. It was this form that won the competition in 1937, announced by the German army to create a fundamentally new container for fuel. Moreover, in 2020, the canister of a new design is celebrating its 81st anniversary. Let's learn more about her.
Until the early 1940s, the loss of fuel in the army due to poor-quality or unsuitable containers could in some cases reach 40% of the available volume. For example, in Germany, 200-liter drums were used to store army fuel, from which the fuel was poured into 20-liter cans. Worst of all, the old containers turned out to be frankly unreliable and often became the cause of fire situations. Finally, they were extremely inconvenient to transport and use.
In 1936, the command of the German army announced a competition to create a car container for a new type of fuel. The most successful was the project of a group of engineers led by V. Grünfogel. A new canister appeared in 1937, and mass production was launched in 1939. Very quickly, the successful packaging captured not only the military, but also the civilian sphere. And after the war, the German 20-liter canister spread all over the world, after which it was also produced in volumes of 5 and 10 liters.

Why does the canister have exactly three handles? In fact, pedantic Germans, making three handles, thought about the ease of carrying. So, the middle handle is needed so that one person can take the cans, and two side ones so that two people can take one can at the same time. So, one carrier can easily take 2 cans, but carrying 40 liters for a long time is extremely difficult. On the other hand, already 2 people can transfer 3 canisters, spending much less effort and time.

In addition, the side handles allow you to take two empty canisters in one hand at once, so one person can take four at once. Finally, the shape of the handle used makes it easier to stack the containers, making it more secure.
