Army models of the Kalashnikov assault rifle are equipped with regular magazines for 30 rounds. If you take an interest in the question deeper, it will become clear that elements of ammunition supply of the same capacity are used with all models of foreign assault rifles. In any case, the number of cartridges in army rifle stores will be close to the value of 30 units. Why did the weapon designers choose this number?
As you might guess, the magazine size of 30 rounds was chosen for a reason. It was at this figure that engineers from different countries stopped after evaluating the rich experience of first using rifles and semi-automatic rifles, followed by submachine guns and automatic rifles during the first two world warrior. Previously, there were attempts to make stores of large volume, but in the end the final choice was made for reasons of rationality.
The fact is that the active ammunition stock of 30 rounds is more than enough for a fighter to conduct effective fire in most combat situations. Especially when you consider the fact that in a real battle, fire is most often fired in short bursts of 3-4 rounds or even single shots. Making 40, 50 or 60 rounds in the store is simply pointless. The fact is that in such a situation, the disadvantages of large ammunition begin to outweigh its advantages.
Stores with non-standard sizes, as a rule, have much poorer ergonomics. Moreover, they weigh decently. In battle, every extra kilogram on hand can ultimately play a cruel joke on the fighter. In its tactical niche, 30 rounds are enough for an automatic rifle. There is another weapon for long-term suppression fire, namely a light machine gun.
A concrete example is worth giving. AKMS weight is 3.3 kg without cartridges and magazine. At the same time, the AKMS equipped and ready for battle already weighs 3.8 kg. The increase seems small, but in fact, almost 500 grams of additional mass is a serious burden on the body of even a trained person. Accordingly, AKMS with a non-standard magazine of a larger capacity will weigh even more.

It should be added that the rate of fire of AKMS single is 40 rounds per minute and 100 rounds per minute - in bursts. One might get the impression that in a real battle, a fighter will rapidly spend all his ammunition. However, this is not at all the case. Most often 3-4 stores in stock are enough. Moreover, during raids, fighters also take "loose" - spare cartridges that are put in a backpack and pockets. Moreover, in most situations, fire is still fired from pre-prepared positions, and most often there is no shortage of cartridges on them.

Non-standard shops are most often used in either shooting sports or special forces. However, if you pay attention to the rare photos of soldiers of some "Alpha" KGB (now the FSB), then you can replace that they use all the same 30-cartridge ammunition supply.
Continuing the topic, you can read about what is the difference between almost identical blades, namely sabers and checkers.
