The debate over which brakes are better - drum or disc, does not subside for a second. Nevertheless, even the brightest fans of "drums" are well aware that this technology is outdated and outdated. True, if everything is so, then I immediately want to ask: why drum brakes still do not leave the market. In fact, the answer to this question is quite simple.
It does not matter what kind of brakes we are talking about - drum or disc, regardless of this, the main indicator of the effectiveness of the braking system is the level of minimum idle. In human terms: the closer the surfaces rubbing at the moment of braking to each other, even before the brakes are activated, the better. This is necessary so that as little time as possible is spent on the useless movement of parts. In an extreme situation, the count can go on for milliseconds.
The fact is that in disc brakes, from the very beginning, a minimum distance between the disc and the pads is ensured. At the same time, drum brakes often require additional measures. Today, this practice has become a thing of the past (mostly), but even on Soviet cars, manual supply of pads was carried out using a wrench. At the end of the last century, automatic systems replaced the manual feed in drum brakes. Today there are two main categories of such automatic systems - "external" and "internal".
The internal padding system gets its name from being located inside the brake cylinder. It is a very crude system, but it works well and is relatively reliable. For example, it is used on most VAZ cars (up to Kalin). Structurally, these are two spring-loaded split rings with pistons and shanks, tightly inserted into the cylinder. With the wear of the brakes, for the internal system to work properly, you have to press the pedal more and more.

We emphasize once again that the internal circuit is quite reliable, but still it does not provide the same level of efficiency as the external self-supply system of the pads. It should be noted right away that nothing else gives the same level of efficiency as an external scheme. This is what makes the "outdated" drum brakes so effective and reliable. Moreover, "external" is a rare example in mechanics, when the absolute simplicity of the mechanism is combined with a low price and incomparable efficiency. Actually, it is precisely because of its drum brakes that they still remain on the market and so far there is no reason to believe that they will become a thing of the past in the near future.
