5 Soviet all-terrain vehicles that did not need asphalt and could playfully go off-road

The Soviet Union was a country with a huge territory, most of which covered areas that were not the most convenient and suitable for living and building infrastructure. Therefore, in the USSR, they created a technique, in a sense, unique in its kind, which could take place in the most inaccessible places. To your attention the "five" Soviet SUVs, which have no lack of asphalt for anything.

ZIL-E167 is a six-wheeled, nine-meter snow and swamp vehicle, which was created for use in the Far North. The technical characteristics of this giant are impressive: the weight of the car is 12 tons, the draft force is about five tons. The car was equipped with two V-8 gasoline engines with 180 horsepower each, as well as two three-speed automatic transmissions. With their help, the ZIL-E167 accelerated to 75 km / h. The car body was made of fiberglass and could accommodate 18 people.

The ZIL-E167 snow and swamp vehicle passed a series of tests, which showed that it was not inferior even to tracked competitors in cross-country ability. However, the history of the car, for reasons unknown to date, ended before it started: the ZIL-E167 never put into mass production, and a reminder of this unique machine was the only rebuilt experienced sample.

2. ZIL-4904

ZIL-4904 is a rotary auger all-terrain vehicle, a ground cutter for off-road conquest. Its phenomenon lies in the fact that this type of car is able to drive in an area where any tracked vehicles get stuck, and is also not afraid of the influence of water. However, at the same time, it is absolutely not adapted for movement on hard surfaces.

ZIL-4904 began to be produced in 1972. Its weight was as much as 7 tons, length - 8.5 meters, and width and height - 3 meters each. It was set in motion by means of two ZIL engines, the total power of which was 360 horses. At the same time, the speed of the auger was low: in a swamp it accelerated to 7.3 km / h, and in water and snow - up to 10 km / h. However, his story was not long-lasting - despite the fact that all tests were successful, the project was eventually closed.

3. ZIL-4906

The ZIL-4906 all-terrain vehicle with the poetic name "Blue Bird" is a floating search and rescue complex, which was jointly developed by designers ZIL and ESKB. Moreover, they created a car specifically for astronauts: it was used to search and rescue spacecraft crews that landed at the most extreme points of the USSR.

So that the complex could be quickly delivered closer to the required place, its dimensions were specially adjusted for the cargo compartments of the IL-76 and AN-12 aircraft, as well as the MI-6 and MI-26 helicopters. The off-road vehicles were equipped with a V-8 gasoline engine with a capacity of about 150 horsepower and a five-speed manual transmission. With their help, the car could move through the water with a maximum speed of 8 km / h.

4. US ET-8

NAMI ET-8 is a pneumatic conveyor that bears some resemblance to the American VWD all-terrain vehicle. It has a rather heavy weight - over 20 tons, so its speed was too slow, and in addition, it turned out to be poorly controlled. Tests showed that the all-terrain vehicle could not be called hardy - it could stall and break at any time. Therefore, the history of a unique, but not very unlucky, all-terrain vehicle ended quickly: the project was recognized as hopeless and closed.

Monstrous all-terrain vehicle from Belarus - wheeled transporter under the index 7907. The design of the twelve-axle all-terrain vehicle began in 1983. In 1985, the plant decided to assemble not one, but two giant trucks at once. The Belarusian unit had a unique feature: it was the only vehicle in the world with 24 driving wheels, 16 of which, among other things, could turn.

The truck's technical characteristics are also large-scale:
MAZ-7907 was equipped with a gas turbine engine from the T-80 tank, with an increased power of up to 1250 horsepower. Additionally, 24 electric motors were installed on each wheel of the unit. Thus, the giant developed a speed of up to 25 km / h.
