Good afternoon, my reader. It is a long tradition to arrange bird feeders in winter. Many residents of private houses and summer residents who visit their summer cottages in winter, in this way lure birds to their site. Having got used to visiting it regularly, with the arrival of heat, the birds will simply switch to the awakened garden insect pests and their larvae, starting to actively destroy them.

Feeders can often be seen in the city. Often adults build them together with children, teaching those from an early age to take care of our younger brothers and take care of nature. Also, making a feeder will help develop imagination and hard work in children. If you are creative about working on it, you can get almost a work of art, although you can go for more a simple way, adapting the material at hand for it: a plastic bottle or some kind of box, for example, from under milk products.
But making a feeder and hanging it up is only half the battle. The main thing is to choose the right thing to fill it with. Many people believe that birds are omnivorous, they will peck everything: cookies, chips, spoiled cereals from old stocks, some kind of food waste. And they really peck at such a "treat", although in most cases it will later affect the work of their digestive system, or even lead to death.
What can and cannot be put into the feeders so as not to harm the birds?
When choosing a menu for birds, it is necessary to take into account a number of nuances.
For example, all birds are known to love seeds. They are high in calories, contain many vitamins and useful microelements, and are easy to digest. Birds will definitely benefit from them. But this only applies to raw seeds. In fried foods, the amount of nutrients is reduced, and if oil and salt were used during frying, they can cause gastrointestinal upset in birds.
In addition to sunflower seeds, the following are suitable for the feeder:
- linseed and hemp seeds;
- melon seeds (pumpkin, melon, watermelon);
- crushed nuts.
Cereals
Any unsalted cereal will be a good treat for birds in boiled form, but not every one in raw form. For example, bird stomachs simply cannot digest rice or buckwheat. Without cooking, only a few cereals can be poured into the feeders - oats, wheat, millet.
It is strongly discouraged to use millet as bird feed, because after removing the grain shell, it not only loses a number of useful properties, but is also subject to oxidation, which makes it even harmful to feathered.
Food waste
In principle, it is impossible to lay them in the feeder. Human food, as a rule, contains a lot of salt, fat, various chemicals such as dyes and preservatives, which is sometimes almost poisonous for poultry. You should not treat her to such "goodies" as crackers for beer, bread, cookies, crackers, chips, salted nuts, popcorn - all this will become a real test for the stomachs of birds.
Fat
Some birds ignore him, some (for example, titmouses) enjoy it with pleasure. So the fat will not linger in the feeder. The only thing is, it shouldn't be salty. You can also add frozen butter, beef or chicken fat to the birds.
Fresh bread
It is generally accepted that it is the optimal food for birds. But this is not the case. In their digestive tract, any fresh baked goods are delayed and may even "ferment", which is fraught with the most negative consequences for birds. Dried bread is less dangerous for them, and only white and moldy.
The birds will like low-fat cottage cheese, chopped boiled eggs. Many people eat fresh apples, dried berries and dried fruits with pleasure.
Finally, you can put special food for domestic ornamental birds into the feeder. You cannot take only compound feed, which is given to farm animals: it contains a lot of salts and harmful additives.
