In an attempt to save money, apartment owners often resort to independent development of the design of the premises. However, after the completion of the repair work, the result is not always the same as planned.
Designer Alena Bolshakova told what mistakes are most common among non-designers and how to avoid them.
7. Poor planning
Without even a rough design project in your head, your chances of a successful interior design will be minimized. Often, in the absence of a plan, there is a desire to buy whatever you like, or what you have wanted for so long. This is a sure way to go nowhere. The result of this approach is likely to be the lack of a single style or a complete mess.
6. Listen to advice from one and all
First of all, do not blindly listen to the words of the workers hired to decorate the premises. Yes, yes, they definitely know how beautiful it is, since it has been accepted for centuries. The same applies to advice from sales assistants. Even if you manage to run into a person with good taste, he can hardly see the whole picture. In addition, it is unlikely that a stranger will be able to fully capture the essence of your personal preferences.
5. Sockets
Thinking about the number and location of outlets is worth much in advance. It will be very problematic to cut a wall with wallpaper already pasted. It is important to take into account the location of the furniture, as well as the number of lighting fixtures. You probably want to avoid buying an extension cord that will stretch across the room.
Especially the lack of sockets, as a rule, is a problem for bathrooms. Decide in advance whether you will use a hairdryer or an electric shaver there.
4. Redevelopment without SNIPs
Compulsory: rely on building codes and regulations. Do not neglect their observance. Otherwise, you can not only run into a fine, but also spend money on repairs twice - the illegal redevelopment will have to be redone. Converting a toilet into a kitchen and vice versa will not come cheap.
3. Lack of lighting
Often, people who develop their own design do not pay enough attention to the issue of lighting. As a result, there is only one light source in the room - a chandelier in the middle of the ceiling. Consider other options as well. It is ideal to use several groups of lighting fixtures that allow changing lighting scenarios. It is also advisable to take care of dimmers, they allow you to adjust the brightness level of any lamp.
2. Furniture along the walls
Arrangement of furniture along the walls, as in a ruler, is traditional for many Russians. It may seem that this way saves space. However, if you place furniture around the perimeter in a large enough room, it will look static and flat. If the area allows, it is better to visually divide a large room into several zones. This will not only add depth to the room, but also expand its functionality.
1. Ergonomics
It is shortsighted to care only about the external beauty of the room. If you want your apartment to be comfortable, you need to think about its ergonomics. The size of the furniture and the amount of storage space should be planned in advance.
