How to combine styles without the "jumble" effect: 7 designer tips

  • Dec 15, 2020

It is not always possible to avoid mixing styles in the interior, and more often it is not necessary. But how to do it correctly so that the apartment looks like "from a picture", and does not turn into a chaotically furnished space?

Designer and studio manager TB.Design Tatiana Bezverkhaya offered 7 universal recommendations that will help make the interior diverse and interesting and at the same time preserve its integrity.

7. Combining is not just possible, but necessary!

The combination of styles in design is in line with the modern trend. Today, one single, verified design direction looks boring, lifeless and insipid.

Therefore, one should not be afraid to take risks, to highlight accents and to make references to other styles in the interior.

6. Lead one of the styles

One of the directions should always be the main one. One style should complement the other or slightly shade it, but the struggle between them on an equal footing can lead to a "mishmash" in the interior.

Of course, with this approach, it is easy to go to the opposite extreme. To avoid this, it is worth considering a number of nuances.

For example, if you have an apartment in "Stalin", it is most optimal to take modern classics as a basis.

It is worth complementing it with either retro, or loft elements, or accents from modern design.

5. Remember the "principle of relevance"

Choosing the basis for your design is necessary taking into account the initial data of the real estate.

To furnish, for example, a compact studio in the spirit of imperial chic is, to say the least, inappropriate.

Some styles involve working with large scales and high ceilings. Therefore, it is extremely strange to try to deploy something in the traditions of American classics in a small apartment. It will look ridiculous, and you will not achieve the desired effect "as in the picture".

It is also better to avoid the use of concentrated classical stylistics in the new residential complex. and, conversely, an ultra-modern high-tech style in an old pre-revolutionary building.

4. Keep in mind that design starts with finishing

The tone for the interior is set not by the furniture, and even less by the decor, but by the finish. This is important to keep in mind at the very beginning of construction. If you are working with some kind of original finish, then before filling the apartment with everything you need, take a look around.

Is there a stucco molding? Which one? What materials are used as flooring, what are on the walls? It can be parquet or laminate, smooth paint or brick-concrete.

So, if you furnish a room with bare brick walls with Louis XV furniture, you will still end up with a loft as a result.

3. In order not to take risks, combine similar styles

In fact, the combinations can be very diverse, but if you are not confident in your abilities and are afraid to make mistakes, then it is better to use stylistics that are close in spirit.

If you gravitate towards modern design, then a scandi with loft or minimalist elements would be a good solution.

Also remember that it is better not to combine with each other multidirectional ethnic motives - for example, Arabic with Japanese or Indian.

It dilutes the interior of ethnicity quite well. However, in this case, the general background should be more neutral.

2. Watch the color

Consider the general palette when combining different directions. Usually, each style is associated with a certain set of shades. Retro is characterized by bright colors: red or red lacquered wood, orange, blue, green, mint tones.

On the contrary, modern classics can most often be seen in neutral, calm colors: white, light beige, in shades of natural wood.

Watch out and don't let there be dissonance between colors from different styles that you decide to use.

1. Develop "observation"

Do not be afraid to experiment if you feel that you have enough "observation". Styles that are completely distant from each other can be successfully and beautifully linked with each other.

Therefore, if you are interested in more daring combinations, watch, google, get inspired, borrow high-quality ideas, and then you will succeed.
