In this article, I have collected a few more practical options for garden fences. Such fences not only visually separate the plantings, but are also able to hold in themselves a compacted layer of fertile soil.
1. From a bar
Making fences for beds from a bar is a rather expensive pleasure. However, if you have the financial ability, this option is definitely worth considering. Fences like these are durable, attractive, and very practical. While working, you can lean on the edges of the bed, sit down, put a bucket or put a tool. Treated wood is not afraid of moisture, scorching sun and frost. The timber is difficult to damage with a shovel or cart. Such fences will stand for more than a dozen years.
The construction of barriers made of timber is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. By and large, it is a miniature log house, similar to that made for a house or a bath. Most often, such fences are bought ready-made, and are simply assembled on the spot.
2. From cinder blocks
A relatively inexpensive and durable fence can be made from double-hollow cinder blocks. The material is perfect for creating low fences around the beds. To make the design look organic, the voids can be filled with pebbles, rubble or fertile soil. In the latter case, you will get pots that are great for planting small flower crops.
The filled cinder blocks are stable enough to maintain the shape of the enclosure without cementitious binder. However, if the beds are not planned to be regularly transferred, it is advisable to strengthen the blocks. This can be done both with concrete and with pegs.
3. Wave slate
From wave slate, you can make neat fences for beds both in the greenhouse and in the open field. To create it, it is better to purchase a new substandard, since the old material will crumble strongly. There is no need to fasten the slate together. The sheets are simply layered on top of each other, which allows you to make a solid monolithic board.
Despite the fact that slate is a rather fragile material, such fences can last for more than a dozen years. It turns out a good combination of price and quality.
It is worth noting that some gardeners do not use slate in their garden, as they consider it hazardous to health. It's all about asbestos, which is contained in the material. However, I cannot confirm or deny this theory.
4. Of bricks
Neat, practical and expensive looking fences can be made from regular bricks. This is not the cheapest option, but such fences will adorn the site for many years. You can even collect a whole composition from the beds. A great example is shown in the picture above.
To create such fences, you do not need a professional tool and special skills. Every owner can make low fences. To do this, you only need cement mortar and the material itself.
The main enemy of brick fencing is walking soil. After spring floods, the masonry can be crooked or cracked. Drainage and replacement of the topsoil will partly help solve this problem.
5. Made of durable plastic
If you have no desire to make fences yourself, you can purchase ready-made solutions. Such structures are assembled in a matter of minutes, and in terms of their external and technical characteristics they are not inferior to many worthy options. The durable plastic from which the panels are made is not afraid of moisture, sun and severe frosts. The material will not fade or crack. By combining elements of different sizes and shapes, you can create a unique design that suits you.
The obvious disadvantage of such fences is their high cost.
