In the middle lane, the weather turned badly. The rains in the Leningrad region practically do not stop, but before the end of the season I still need to have time to dig up the bulbous ones. This year I have quite a few of them and I have already regretted that I did not give preference to crops wintering in the soil. In the future I will try to change priorities.

I present to your attention a selection of bulbous, which perfectly tolerate cold and snowless winters. Initially, I made it for myself, but in the end I decided to share it with you.

1. Crocuses

The bulbs of these small delicate flowers can be safely left in the ground for 5 years. They perfectly tolerate the cold and snowless winters of the middle zone. The main condition for a problem-free existence is good drainage. If in the first half of summer there were prolonged rains and moisture stagnation was observed at the place where the crocuses were growing, the bulbs should be dug, dried, disinfected and examined. All healthy material should be left in until early fall and then re-planted in well-drained soil. Undamaged bulbs overwinter favorably and crocuses will continue to delight with delicate flowering.

2. Lilies

Most species of lilies tolerate moderate cold in the middle zone well and are able to stay in one place for up to 5 years. The flower does not require special shelter. A 10 cm layer of snow will be enough for him. In a snowless winter, plantings can be sprinkled with dry peat, fallen leaves or needles. The latter will be preferable, since it is less attractive for wintering slugs.

The bulbs will have to be dug out as the culture grows, aging and loss of decorative properties. Until this moment, you can safely forget about the procedure and engage in other gardening concerns.

3. Irises

Bulbous irises perfectly tolerate winter cold and do not need shelter. In rare cases, the planting site can be mulched with foliage, dry peat, pine needles, or covered with spunbond. The layer thickness should not exceed 2 cm so that the culture does not straighten out.

Like many other bulbous, irises are afraid of waterlogged soil, so they need to be planted in well-drained soil. During heavy rains, the bulbs can be dug up so that they do not have time to rot and deteriorate.

4. Daffodils

There is no need to dig up daffodils every year. This culture winters well in the middle lane without any shelter. In anticipation of severe frosts, the planting site can be mulched with dry peat, needles or foliage. Dig up the bulbs only for drying, decontamination and cleaning. The rest of the time they can be in the soil.

Don't dig up daffodils too often. Delicate bulbs are easily injured. The optimal time for growing in one place is 4-5 years. This culture will definitely not give you any trouble.

5. Tulips

Tulips are another flower crop that doesn't need to be dug up for the winter. Old varieties can be left in the ground for up to 5 years, new varieties need annual drying and replanting. True, if varietal qualities are secondary for you, then the procedure can be neglected.

I recently got groups In contact with and Classmates, there I post announcements of new materials every day.
