5 useful homemade products for a summer residence and a vegetable garden: adopting the experience of folk craftsmen

  • Dec 15, 2020

In this article, I have collected several useful homemade products that were invented by folk craftsmen to facilitate work in the garden. All of them are made from scrap materials and do not require professional tools. If you wish, you can always make them yourself without drawings and detailed descriptions.

1. Sowing marker

To speed up the process of planting garden crops, you can make a universal marker. The device allows you to create neat grooves, located at the same distance from each other. In one step, you can make several dozen holes at once, into which the seed is laid.

The depth and width of the holes depends on the size of the spikes, which are selected for the task at hand.

Rectangular plywood sheets with a thickness of more than 5 mm are used as a marker base. On them, with the help of self-tapping screws, trims of a rounded pole of the same length are attached. For ease of use, a wooden handle is added to the back of the plywood.

2. Plastic pipe seeder

From a few meters of plastic pipe, you can make a seeder that will keep your lower back healthy. When using homemade products, you do not have to bend over and measure the distance between the grooves. For sowing, it is enough to set the tool in the previously prepared soil, slightly push and throw the seed into the hole.

In one step, we sow and immediately create a hole for a new seed. After several minutes of using the drill, the process is greatly accelerated. The product allows you to save energy and time, and therefore increase productivity.

To create a planter, you will need a plastic pipe, one corner, two tees and a container for seed. As the latter, you can take an old tin can or a small bucket of sour cream.

3. Coil - peg

To organize the beds and create even furrows, you will need a rope with pegs. It will help you navigate the plowed area without measuring tools. Despite its simplicity, such a rope is very inconvenient to store and unwind. To solve this problem, folk craftsmen invented a coil - a peg. The simplest device is a reel with a handle for wrapping and a foot for installation in the ground.

To create a coil, you will need a small piece of plywood, a jigsaw, a threaded rod (long bolt), a bar, the base on which the rope will be wound, as well as a couple of dozen studs. The design is easy to modify for the materials available and the tasks set.

4. Root washing table

To clean root crops from soil and dirt, you can use a bowl or colander, or you can make an unusual table. The structure is a wooden frame with a fine metal mesh. It allows you to wash off the soil from the harvest in a short time and leave the vegetables to dry. If necessary, such a table can be easily converted into a dryer. For this, the fruits are laid out in an even layer on the surface of the net.

The size of the device depends on the task at hand. This can be either a large table or a small extension to the sink. Fine mesh can be purchased at any hardware store. The products are sold in small rolls that can be transported even by train.

5. Rotary composter

A rotating composter is an excellent alternative to the pit. The product has a number of advantages over its classic counterpart.

  • The rotating bowl mixes the contents easily;
  • To unload the compost, it is enough to bring the wheelbarrow and turn the barrel;
  • Plastic walls protect the contents from pests (rodents, snakes, etc.);
  • Raw materials are evenly heated from all sides;
  • If necessary, the structure can be easily dismantled.

To create, you need a plastic barrel, fasteners for a lid, a medium-diameter PVC pipe and several meters of timber.
