Three simple, reliable ways to unscrew a torn self-tapping screw

  • Dec 16, 2020

Recently I was at a furniture maker, in his workshop. He enlightened me how a screw differs from a self-tapping screw. I wrote about this earlier. Prior to this conversation, he also shared with me information on how to unscrew the torn off screws.

A common case of breaking the head of self-tapping screws and screws is the use of a bit that is not suitable for certain mestizos. Because of this, gaps appear between the head and the bit. Which leads to a weak stop and breakdown of the bit, as well as "licking" the screw head.

How to unscrew torn off self-tapping screws and screws?

Method 1

If you have an engraver, such as "DREMEL", then you can install a small cut-off wheel in it. And with it, make a longitudinal notch. Thus, you can stick a flat screwdriver into this recess and unscrew the ill-fated mestizo.

In order to understand the essence of the methods in more detail, I recommend flipping through the galleries.

Method 2

If the screw is made of soft metal, you can use an old screwdriver to make a longitudinal groove. By hitting the screwdriver installed on the screw.

This creates a groove for which the screwdriver clings. Due to this, the self-tapping screw can be unscrewed.

Method 3

The head can be re-formed. For this you need a soldering iron, acid (soldering). Tin of hard grades.

The previously torn off head must be etched with soldering acid. Thus, cleaning the surface.

Next, we warm up a piece of tin in the torn off head. Heating it to a liquid state, in a solder bath, insert an old screwdriver or bit. We stop heating. After cooling down, we get formed faces. If you apply force on the screwdriver, the self-tapping screw will turn out.

How to turn out a self-tapping screw without a head?

This kind of trouble does not happen often, but it does happen. If you want to turn out a self-tapping screw without a wood head, then we need a drill for the tile.

But the drill should not be feather, made from segments of carbide. And circular, with carbide spraying. With its help we drill a piece of wood and a screw.

In the enlarged hole, if required, you can reinstall the self-tapping screw, but with a support washer or install a dowel in it. And install the product using the updated (drilled) hole.
