Let's not be cunning - the stove in the middle of the kitchen, or in a place remote from the entire structure of the kitchen unit, is no longer exotic. If you treat cooking as a creative process, and the size of your kitchen allows you to build a creative island for culinary delights, then our article is addressed to you.
Island kitchens are quite interesting design and engineering solutions. The fact is that the cooking process smoothly moves from the wall and corner space to the center. This allows not only to concentrate the entire cooking process in one place, but also to provide maximum access to everything that is cooked, fried, steamed on the stove.

About island cuisine and more
There is nothing new under the sun. And island cuisine is not a new idea. One might even say - old European. This placement of the stove allows several cooks to work at the same time without interfering with each other.
In the design of the island, the following elements are thought out in advance and included:
- Plate;
- Surface for cutting food, kitchen countertop;
- Washing.
All inclusive - exotic island.
Experts propose to build such islands with a total kitchen area of 20-25 square meters. But the craftsmen are ready to write it even in 10 squares. But, we have to upset you, in a kitchen of 10 square meters, the full-fledged location of an island with a full functional filling is impossible.
Only imitation is possible, or the removal of one element, which, of course, will revive the interior, but cannot be considered a full-fledged island. Like in the photo.
It looks more like a peninsula.
Species - main characteristics
To move from the general to the particular, and also, so that you have a complete understanding of island-type kitchens, we give below their main characteristics and the presence of their constituent elements:
- the set of the island includes a sink, which requires an independent supply of water and sewerage;
- a dish dryer is not represented by a wall cabinet, but by compartments in the lower cabinet. In this case, it is desirable to provide for additional moisture removal;
- the work surface is planned taking into account the area of \ u200b \ u200bthe kitchen, but should allow you to freely cook a dish, one or more;
- the island, at the request of the customer, can be equipped with a refrigerator, microwave oven and other built-in household appliances under the countertop, but it is not worth overloading the structure;
- small electrical appliances can be placed on the work surface, but remember: there should be a measure in everything;
- an island hood for the kitchen is located above the working surface of the stove.

Choosing a hood is easy
Choosing an island hood will not be difficult, if you immediately decided which type is best for you:
- recirculating;
- or exhaust.
The fact is that recirculation (or the process of returning air flows) does not require an additional outlet air masses, and, therefore, does not need removal channels hidden by decorative elements (cm. also kitchen hoods - types).
Note!
The installation of this hood is “formal”. As a rule, of all that needs to be connected, only the wiring remains.
The exhaust system is reliable in the sense that everything that gets into the air flows leaves the room without even having time to say goodbye. But there are limitations, which we have already mentioned above. You need a channel, you need a ventilation shaft, you need docking and often decorative elements that will hide this structure.
The channel can be decorated with a false beam.
Some technical terms
To ensure that kitchen island hoods do not cause your teeth grinding and you do not consider it the most useless purchase for your home - check out our technical "cutting".
She will certainly help you choose the hood you need for your island.
- The first parameter is dimensions: the hood must completely cover your hob.
Note!
If the hood has a working surface less than the area of the stove, then this can cause the rattle that we wrote about.
Such a hood simply will not cope with the load, and the fat will safely settle wherever it pleases, including on the hood itself.
Therefore, it is necessary to take an equal area hood, or with an area exceeding the plate. In some cases, it is possible to install two hoods.

The second parameter is performance. It's no secret that the resource of any mechanism is limited. It depends on the capabilities of the engine unit.
But opportunities are opportunities, and we need a resource that can easily cope with our volume of air.
Determining the calculated indicator is very simple. We multiply the volume of the kitchen by two factors. We will not dwell on determining the volume, each of us is able to multiply the height by the width and by the length of our own kitchen.
And the odds are 12 and 1.3. Both coefficients were established by calculation and experimental ways and correspond to the circulation volume for the kitchen - 12, and the indicator for the air outlets - 1.3.
Odds in action.
Note!
For clarity with a kitchen area of 12 square meters and a ceiling height of 4 meters, we get the following calculation. 12 * 4 (we get the volume of the kitchen) * 12 * 1.3 = 749.
That is, the power of the hood installed in the kitchen should not be less than 749 cubic meters per hour.
Turning the technical page
But before doing this, a few more words. Island kitchen hoods are considered low noise, but everything is learned by comparison. In the passport attached to the product, you will find a figure for the noise level in decibels, which, as a rule, tells few people about something.
Therefore, we want to clarify the situation a little. If the noise level of your hood is 50 dB, we will assume that you are in luck. Allowed 65 dB. And for comparison: turning a book page - 10 dB, and screaming in the street - 90 dB.
And installation
And installation will not be a problem. Install a cooker hood with your own hands, it is not just possible, but also necessary. And our instructions will help you.
To install the hood you need:
- supply power;
- mark the dowel inserts in the ceiling, drill them, insert and strengthen the hood;
- if the hood provides for a ventilation duct, install it;
- check the operation of the hood.
Install and check.
Finally
If you decide to equip your island with an island hood, then don't worry. To date, manufacturers have developed so many models that there are enough for everyone. The only criterion that significantly distinguishes them from each other is the price. Our traditional video will allow you to once again go through all the material and with your own eyes, make sure that the island hood is a must for you.
