Walnut winter and summer grafting technology: 2 best ways

  • Dec 31, 2020

Good afternoon, my reader. To get a walnut on the site, the easiest way is to buy a ready-made seedling. Since this crop grows slowly, the harvest will have to wait 5-6 years. However, if a walnut tree is already growing in the garden, this period can be reduced by 1-2 years with the help of grafting.

Best time to get vaccinated

The walnut is grafted using the same technology as other fruit crops. For this procedure, varieties (hybrids) suitable for growing in the middle lane are best suited:

  • Sadko;
  • Bukovina bomb;
  • Harvestable;
  • Pelan;
  • Astakhovsky;
  • Ivan Crimson.

Cuttings of these varieties, grafted onto heart-shaped or Manchurian nuts, will begin to bear fruit after 3-4 years. Experts believe that the best time for this event is summer (mid-July) and late winter - early spring (February-March).

In the warm season, young trees of 2 years of age are used as a stock. For the scion, the buds of freshly cut one-year-old cuttings are selected. If the vaccination is going to be done in winter, then the stock and the scion are prepared in advance - in late autumn.

It is theoretically possible to vaccinate at other times of the year (spring, autumn). However, in practice, this often does not give positive results: the cuttings do not take root well.

Winter grafting

This activity will take some effort and patience. In late autumn, after leaf fall, 2-3 weeks before the onset of frost, the scion is harvested. To do this, choose an annual shoot up to 50 cm long with a diameter of at least 10-15 cm.

Moreover, it should have well-developed dormant buds. The material for the scion is cut into several cuttings, each of which will be about 12-15 cm long.

These fragments are placed in a container filled with wet sand (sawdust) and placed in a dark place. The air temperature in the storage should be from 0 to 5 ° C, and the humidity should be above 70%. Until the end of winter, you need to monitor the condition of the substrate and, if necessary, moisten it.

For the stock in the garden, a healthy 2-year-old tree is selected and dug up. The root system is cleaned of soil, wrapped with foil and, having laid it in a box, covered with wet sand (sawdust). The stock is stored in the same way as cuttings.

In late February - early March, the material for inoculation is brought into a warmer room, where the temperature is kept within 14-15 ° C. Grafts (cuttings) are treated with a growth stimulant. And only then they start the vaccination procedure using the improved copulation method.

After that, the grafted trees are again wrapped in plastic wrap and placed in boxes with a damp substrate. The next 2-3 weeks they are stored indoors at a temperature of 18-20 ° C.

Then the seedlings are placed until spring in a cooler storage facility, where the air temperature fluctuates between 3-5 ° C. Landing in open ground is carried out in late April - early May, when the ground warms up enough.

Summer vaccination

This event is held in the middle of summer using the half-ring budding method. On a one-year shoot, an incision is made in the bark with a sterile knife, and in this place a healthy bud ("eye") of the required variety is grafted. The place of the scion is wrapped with electrical tape, leaving only the bud on the surface. The result will be noticeable in 2-3 weeks.

Walnut, unlike other fruit trees, is very difficult to graft. However, it is still worth trying with the help of grafting to grow a valuable tree for everyone to envy.
