Is it possible to impregnate wood with "working off"? My worst mistakes

  • Jan 05, 2021

Once I was young and inexperienced, and therefore I used "working off". I liked that this tool is affordable and cheap.

But over the years, the mind has appeared, and I have forever abandoned "working off" and various impregnations, which are based on diesel fuel. The inspiration came to me only after I got seriously involved in the repair of old wooden houses and roofs.

If you coat the wood with used oil, it will become loose over time. In addition, fungi and mold actively reproduce on it. At first I wondered why this was happening. Mushrooms appear on subfloors and beams, and wooden coasters that haven't reached their hands to cover them with used oil feel great.

Everything turned out to be quite simple. Initially, the oil "drowns out" the wood, acting as a vapor barrier. Because of this, the tree dries poorly, since the oil does not contain antiseptics. The result is an excellent breeding ground for mushrooms.

"Development" dissolves resin wood, destroys lignin. When the oil dries up or is washed away, the natural protection of the wood is lost with it. Log buildings are saved from mold with special impregnations, antiseptics, pastes, etc.

Also used are wax, drying oil, lime, turpentine, kerosene, paraffin, vitriol, charring and other folk methods.

Note that this list does not include diesel fuel, lubricating oils and other substances. Therefore, today I boldly assert that "working off" is not suitable for residential buildings. I also do not recommend using creosote and bitumen.
