In pharmacies, mercury thermometers are almost not sold, and electronic thermometers that have come to replace them very often show something wrong.
I learned how to get any digital medical thermometer to read the temperature correctly.
I also did a little experiment today.
I had an assumption that medical thermometers do not just measure temperature, but somehow cleverly recalculate the measured values so that they correspond to the results of a mercury thermometer. The experiment showed that the assumption was wrong - and the digital and mercury thermometers, placed in water, showed the same values.
Another type of medical thermometer - non-contact, actually recalculate the obtained temperature values. That is why many of these thermometers have a "body-surface" switching and if the body temperature is measured in the "surface" mode, the value will be three degrees below it.
All electronic medical contact thermometers are accurate enough (usually 0.1 or 0.2 degrees), so why are they measuring the temperature incorrectly? It's simple - they don't have time to warm up enough under the arm. Let me remind you that in many countries the temperature is measured mainly rectally (that is, in the butt).
It turned out that there is a very simple way to make an electronic thermometer correctly measure the temperature under the arm:
1. Not including the thermometer, we place it under the arm and wait five minutes.
2. Without taking out the thermometer, we turn it on and wait for it to beep.
3. A thermometer will show body temperature no less accurately than a mercury one.
