Good afternoon, my reader. Garlic is exposed to various diseases not only during growth in the garden, but even after harvesting, during storage. Timely detection of signs of the disease and preventive measures will help to save the harvest.

Varieties of mold

In case of improper harvesting and violation of storage conditions, garlic is affected by mold. There are several varieties.

Aspergillosis

Fungal disease affecting garlic, if in the cellar:

  • humidity over 75%;
  • temperature is above 20 ° C;
  • poor ventilation.

The disease affects not only the already harvested crop, but also the garlic sets.

Signs:

  • the formation of black plaque on the scales (spores);
  • gradual softening of the inside;
  • the formation of spores between the teeth.

Penicillosis

Or green mold. A disease caused by fungal spores.

Signs of aspergillosis:

  • brown spots;
  • green-blue plaque on the heads;
  • characteristic unpleasant odor.
Gradually, the head acquires a watery consistency, pale yellow pits form on the teeth. After 2 months, it becomes completely soft.

If infected specimens are not removed in a timely manner, green mold will spread to healthy ones and destroy the crop completely.

Gray mold

The appearance of first yellow-brown spots, and then gray bloom, indicates the defeat of garlic with gray mold.

Control and prevention measures

When signs of a disease are detected, they immediately begin to fight it. First of all, the infected copies are sorted out and removed. The procedure is carried out every month. At the initial stage of the disease, they are treated with fungicides.

Preventive measures:

  1. Before planting, the seedlings are disinfected: they are etched for 20 minutes in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Then dry thoroughly.
  2. The room, before planting a crop in it, is ventilated, disinfected, dried, and the ventilation is checked.
  3. The harvest is harvested in dry weather, before being placed in the cellar, they are dried.
  1. Store in wooden boxes with oxygen holes.

Cervical rot

A common fungal disease. Spores affect underdeveloped and poorly dried heads, penetrating through the neck. Infection begins in the ground or in uncleaned foliage in the garden, spores are carried by the wind.

At an early stage, the disease goes away unnoticed. The first visible signs appear 14 days after harvest:

  • pits with a gray bloom are visible on the neck;
  • apply to the entire head;
  • inside the tissue becomes soft, watery, yellow-pink;
  • an unpleasant odor appears.

It is impossible to completely cure the crop from neck rot. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures:

  1. Choose varieties of garlic with high disease resistance.
  2. Etch the planting material.
  3. Before storage, carefully inspect and select the affected heads.
  4. Treat with "Fundazol" solution.
  5. Observe storage conditions.

Bacterial rot

A dangerous disease that can destroy the culture both during the growth period and during storage.

Signs:

  • yellow-brown ulcers and stripes on the head;
  • transparent teeth;
  • inside the garlic becomes watery, then brown;
  • the appearance of an unpleasant odor.

The disease is provoked by bacteria contained in the soil, carried by pests.

As a preventive measure:

  • prepare seed and planting site;
  • the heads are sorted out and examined during storage;
  • comply with the rules of harvesting and storage.

Drying the heads of garlic

This is a normal physiological process - gradually the moisture evaporates and the garlic dries out.

It is impossible to get rid of it, but you can slow it down:

  1. Boil 500 ml of linseed oil and 10 drops of iodine. The head is completely covered with the composition and dried thoroughly. Then they put it in the cellar.
  2. The paraffin is melted and garlic is dipped in it for 2 minutes.

Processing in this way slows down the evaporation of moisture.

Observing all the conditions for planting garlic and harvesting crops, they preserve the harvest for a long time. Without loss of taste and nutrients.
