In fact, the door of a US police car may well protect itself from firearms. The fact is that inside each door there is a ballistic plate corresponding to the second class of protection. This provides a fairly reliable degree of protection not only against 9 mm, but also against the 7.62 caliber. It is interesting that the installation of these plates began relatively recently - since 2010. For most of the rest of the time, American cops drove around without armored doors. The only exception was the 1930s, when armor plates were also placed under the body, but by the 1940s it was abandoned - it was too expensive.
However, all the time, when there was no trace of armor plates in the doors of the cars, US police officers hid behind them in the shootings for two reasons. First, the patrol could always make impromptu armor. To do this, it was enough to throw on the car door additional body armor from the assault kit stored in the trunk. Secondly, the car door is traditionally used by cops as a palm rest. It sounds strange, however, when you need to sit with a weapon to the advantage for an hour or two, arriving constantly at the ready being in a cordon - your hands get tired and numb.
In addition, the door hides the policeman well and the distance, even 100 meters, is not always noticeable if there is someone behind it or still not. Moreover, the American cops, having put them in a cordon, almost always open both front doors to “divert eyes”, even if no one is sitting behind them.
