Batteries in Fix Price stores

Fixprice stores sell three types of AA and AAA batteries. I bought them, tested and compared them.

At the beginning of this year, in addition to salt and alkaline batteries of its own brand FLARX, in Fixprice, Energizer Alkaline batteries appeared at a price of 99 rubles for four pieces. This is very cheap for Energizer, although these batteries are sold at the same price in Krasnoe & Beloe stores.

I am sure that the majority of buyers perceive the batteries on Fixprice's shelves as follows: "these for 55 rubles are certainly bad, but the Energizer for 99 rubles is certainly better." But what in reality?

I tested the batteries with a chemical current analyzer Yarostanmash ASK2.5.10.8. Two copies of each type of battery were tested, tests were carried out in June 2021.

To test the capacity and load capacity, the batteries were discharged in two modes:

- discharge with a current of 100 mA to 0.7 V. The test shows what maximum energy the battery can give;
- discharge equivalent to resistance 3.9 Ohm for AA and 5.1 Ohm for AAA up to 0.9 V. This test shows how the batteries are suitable for powerful loads (toys with motors, blood pressure monitors and other medical equipment).

For comparison, I added the notoriously good GP Super batteries to the test, which are not sold in FixPrice.

Two copies of each type of battery were tested. The diagrams show the average capacity in mWh.

AA batteries. Blue bars - discharge with a current of 100 mA up to 0.7 V, red bars - a discharge with an equivalent resistance of 3.9 Ohm to 0.9 V.

AAA batteries. Blue bars - discharge with a current of 100 mA up to 0.7 V, red bars - a discharge with an equivalent resistance of 5.1 Ohm up to 0.9 V.

I will give all the measurement results for both copies of each battery model.

The cheapest AA saline batteries provide five times less energy than alkaline batteries (AAA four times). They can be used with devices with ultra-low power consumption (watches, remotes), but even in these devices, they are likely to last less due to their short lifespan and are more likely to may leak.

Energizer Alkaline batteries give slightly more energy than FLARX Alkaline, but they are twice as expensive, and the difference in stored energy is only about 4% for AA and 7% for AAA. This difference is so small that in real use you will hardly feel it.

Energizer Alkaline and FLARX Alkaline handle heavy loads in exactly the same way: the difference in energy output at high and low loads is 25-25% for AAA and 35-36% for AA.

Perhaps the only significant difference between Energizer Alkaline and FLARX Alkaline is the stated shelf life. Energizer indicates 10 years, FLARX is only 3 years old, but in reality this may be just marketing and it is possible that these batteries age in the same way.

My conclusion from this test is simple: in Fix Price, you can safely buy FLARX Alkaline at 55 rubles for 4 pieces.

P.S. Let me remind you that now the cheapest and most profitable alkaline batteries (8 rubles apiece) are sold in Svetofor stores. You can take batteries in red packs with a large PROMO inscription (inside there are green Ergolux batteries), you cannot take pink packs with red Ergolux batteries (they say Alkaline, but they saline).
