Hello dear readers and subscribers!

Recently I made a very informative and interesting excursion to the Ethnographic Park-Museum dedicated to the history of the Chusovaya River. The "highlight" of this place is its location in the open air. The museum displays old wooden buildings that were built in the 16th century. Exhibits are brought here from all over Russia.

And that's what caught my eye. More than one hundred years have passed, and most of these ancient buildings are still intact, albeit half. Some elements of the buildings have undergone restoration; logs and roof elements have been replaced.

But I was surprised that the wood for the most part has been perfectly preserved to this day.

It should be noted that not every brick or stone house will last that long. At the same time, in the old days there was no chemistry that would have been used to process wood. So why are the buildings of those years still intact? What secret did our ancestors know? How did they escape from rotting, the invasion of small bugs, etc.?

I immediately thought about my cozy wooden house and bathhouse. I would like them to serve, if not 300, but at least 100 years. I wondered if it is possible in modern realities to build a log house that will stand for more than one century.

I asked this question to a builder I know. About 5 years ago, he helped build a wooden house for my father. This builder is experienced, experienced and reliable, so I turned to him for advice.

An acquaintance told me that the wooden houses that are being built today can serve for centuries. But only for their construction should be used pine logs brought from northern latitudes.

Pine dead wood is called Kelo. It is no secret that the northern regions have a harsh climate, and therefore the growth of trees there is very slow. The diameter of the pines increases annually by a maximum of 2 millimeters. But the wood with unhurried growth turns out to be dense. Kelo can stand for many years if not removed forcibly.

The trunks of the pine trees will stand without branches and bark, but they will not start to rot. The wood will not dry out or crack over time. The people call such pines "stone".

Such wood is hard and difficult to process. It is difficult and expensive to build a house out of it. The cost of a finished pine log house is several times higher than the cost of other tree species.

In the markets today, you can stumble upon bad dead wood, which sellers pass off as a Karelian rusk. If you look closely, you can see that the logs are rotten and damaged by bugs. Karelian deadwood cannot and will not be cheap!
