Planting methods

Onions are a two-year culture. In the first year, it develops a bulb, and the next season, a plant that gives seeds. There are three ways to grow onions:

  1. Vegetative. With this method, the culture is planted in small onions. Zoned varieties grow best. It is planted in late spring in parallel with the set.
  2. Like a one-year-old. Large heads can be obtained from seedlings in the first year. Gardeners rarely use this method - it is too labor-intensive, but it pays off with interest with a good harvest.
  3. Like a two year old. In the first summer, sevok is grown on the garden bed. After a year, it becomes a planting material. It is best to grow medium and late varieties in this way.

What grew in the garden

In order for the culture to grow better, it is necessary to observe the crop rotation. Not all vegetable growers remember this. It is undesirable to place a bed with bulbs in one place for two years in a row. The best predecessors of onions will be crops that have been heavily fertilized. For planting before winter, a bed after legumes is best suited: peas and beans, cereals, pumpkins, cucumbers and mustard with beets. You should not break a place for onions on the ground, where the predecessors were onions, root vegetables (except beets), garlic, parsley, radishes, potatoes, clover or alfalfa.

When and how to plant onions before winter

For planting, only healthy bulbs are selected without damage, rot and signs of various diseases. Seed material is laid out in three piles:

  1. Bulbs up to 1 centimeter in diameter.
  2. Sevok - up to 3 centimeters.
  3. The sample is everything that is larger than the set.

The first and second groups are used to obtain onions, and the selection is planted when they want to get green onions.

The bed is located in the brightest place of the site, and water should not stagnate on it. The land should be pre-treated with a solution of copper sulfate and fertilized: for each square meter, 4 kilograms of humus and peat.

The bed is dug up and compacted after leveling. Furrows are formed at a distance of 15 centimeters and a depth of 5 centimeters. The bulbs are laid out, leaving a gap of 3 centimeters between them, and sprinkled with humus and peat.

Landing dates

Usually in the fall, onions begin to be planted at the end of the first week of October and are completed by the beginning of November. It is better to navigate by the climate in the region where the culture will grow. Experienced gardeners wait until the thermometer reaches +7 ° C, and begin planting work, they should be completed before the onset of frost, otherwise the onion will freeze and will not rise in spring. It is worth remembering that from the moment of planting until the onset of cold weather, the bulb needs to take root, but also not to start growing. This usually lasts from 14 to 20 days. The crop bed is mulched with peat. The layer must be at least 2 centimeters. In winter, the bed is covered with snow and tamped.

Planting onions before winter is worth doing if you want to get a harvest much earlier than a neighbor who planted it in spring. In addition, it will be perfectly stored.
