It all started with the fact that I walked past a neighbor's house, from which came a tirade of swear words at someone's address. Coming a little closer, I understood everything. The neighbor tried to cut the glass, and at the same time swore heavily.
Apparently, he had already made many attempts, since under the feet of his neighbor was a pile of broken glass. It became clear that Ivanitch (as we kindly call our neighbor) needed help, and urgent!
I went up to a neighbor and gently asked how exactly he cuts glass. Ivanitch threw another piece that did not work out on the floor and began to complain to me!
It turned out that initially the neighbor tapped the line along which he was going to cut. This is a gross mistake, since such manipulation leaves uneven chips on the glass. As a result, it breaks in the wrong line.
I advised Ivanitch not to do this anymore, and also suggested that he walk to my workshop. There I took a glass cutter and made a figured cut on a piece of glass. The glass snapped in just the right line. The neighbor even whistled in surprise. He asked what kind of magic glass cutter I had, and where I could get one.
I told Ivanitch the whole truth. In fact, I myself cut glass very, very rarely. When I have to do this, I work with an oil roller glass cutter. It has a lot of advantages when compared with an ordinary roller glass cutter. If you are new to this business, then I also advise you to get this oil glass cutter.
Before starting cutting, you need to make sure that the glass is clean. At least wipe the cutting line with a cloth. For straight cuts, I use a guide. For these purposes, an ordinary rail with a glued rubber strip is suitable, thanks to which it does not slip.
I install the glass cutter so that it retreats from the edge by 1 - 2 millimeters. Pressing a little on the tool, I lead it along the entire line. On the other edge of the glass, it should slide off.
If you will be using an ordinary glass cutter, then it must be held perpendicular to the glass. To make the roller easier to walk on the surface of the glass, it should be smeared with oil or kerosene.
The oil glass cutter should be handled as lightly and naturally as a pencil. And when cutting glass, do not press hard on the tool. The glass cutter roller itself is lubricated with oil during operation, which facilitates the process. In addition, the tool has a spring mechanism.
Having made a cut, you need to grab the edges of the glass on both sides of the cut line, and gently break it. Notice I'm not tapping anything! You don't need to do this!
Remember that you are working with sharp glass, so wear gloves.
Sometimes thick glass does not come out to break with your hands. Then I put a screwdriver under the cutting line, press one side of the glass, and press on the other.
Here is such a master class I gave Ivanitch. After that I gave him my oil glass cutter and sent him to practice. To his neighbor's surprise, he succeeded on the first try. To make Ivanitch even more happy, I gave him a glass cutter, since I had one more in stock in my workshop.
The neighbor began to respect me more than before, he thanks me almost at every meeting. And I am pleased, and he feels good! This is how a simple little thing made life easier for a person and saved his nerve cells.
