In all of Russia, the Irbit Motorcycle Plant (IMZ) is the only manufacturer of heavy motorcycle vehicles. He became famous after he released "Ural" - a motorcycle that became a popular favorite. But the manufacturers did not stop at this model. The plant is actively supplying Russians with vehicles today.
1. History of IMZ
The formation and development of the plant as a major manufacturer of motor vehicles fell on the thirties of the last century. Then the government of the USSR was engaged in solving the issue of producing a powerful motorcycle for army purposes. Since the developments that were already available did not meet the necessary requirements, they decided to make a copy of the famous BMWR-71 - a German motorcycle with a sidecar. The government ordered the secret purchase of several motorcycle models from Sweden.
The choice fell on this particular model quite reasonably. The German motorcycle at that time had amazing technical characteristics. The engine had excellent traction at low revs. Its cooling system, due to the cylinders spaced to the side, worked perfectly. The rear-wheel drive transmitted the torque to the wheel through the propeller shaft. During operation, there was no need to adjust anything further.
To build such a machine, precise, special equipment of high quality and a certain level of production were required. At the factories of the Soviet Union, neither one nor the other was. After all the details were examined in terms of chemical composition, nature and depth of surface treatment, accuracy and purity of creation, it was decided to launch the production of analogs.
In 1941 g. this task was entrusted to the Iskra, an experimental Moscow plant. But the war was already going on, which corrected all the plans. The plant was forcedly evacuated to g. Irbit to the Urals. There, on the territory of the former local brewery, they built workshops and began to produce M-72 - motorcycles that are copies of the BMWR-71. A full-scale production of motorcycles was established for the needs of the army.
Years later, in 1957. the plant began production of motor vehicles for civilian use. The first road motorcycle was the Ural M-52, the prototype of which was the M-72 military vehicle. Over the entire history of its existence, the number of motorcycles produced by IMZ has exceeded 3,000,000. After the Soviet Union ceased to exist, the scale of production was significantly reduced.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the crisis did not bypass the IMZ either. During this difficult time, the company had to go through a lot, including bankruptcy, but over time, work on it resumed. For the most part, the technique began to be produced for export.
2. What IMZ is currently producing
Now the plant is called OJSC IMZ. Solo and sidecar heavy motorcycles are produced here. Of the total, 90 percent is exported abroad, mainly to Europe, America, Japan and Australia. This year, the last three models are especially relevant: Ural Gear Up, Ural CT and Ural Bobber LE.
The flagship model Ural Gear Up has a two-cylinder, four-stroke 745 cc engine. Its capacity is 41 liters. with.
Ural CT single motorcycle with sidecar, made in classic style. All engine characteristics are the same as the previous model. Able to reach speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour.
The latest model in this line is the Ural Bobber LE. The design of the car is similar to the models from the past Irbit S-51 and M-52C (sports motorcycles). In terms of performance, it is similar to the two models already described.
The Urals, which are produced today, are a kind of tribute to a bygone era. But despite the characteristic design, the technique is equipped with new electronics, units and assemblies.

The cost of modern models is quite high, since all parts are imported and, accordingly, expensive. On average, a new motorcycle costs over half a million rubles. The company plans to increase the demand for their equipment among the domestic consumer and begin the production of electric motorcycles.
