6 perennials that delight me with a green crown even in winter. I make them unpretentious for their beauty and unpretentiousness

  • Dec 07, 2021

With the onset of autumn, the garden gradually loses its colors and is no longer so pleasing to the eye. However, on my site, I planted perennials that have bright greenery even in winter. I want to talk about them in more detail.

Saxifrage

An unpretentious plant, the bright purple flowers of which effectively contrast with the gray stones. The plant is compact, able to take root even on the most scanty soil and grow into a lush carpet.

On my site, in the root circles, a mossy species of this perennial is growing, which is called Arends. Flowering occurs from May to June, and in winter, small leaves of saturated color remain under the snow.

Heather

Another unpretentious plant that is popular in landscaping for its vibrant colors. I could not ignore this wonderful perennial.

It grows actively on acidified soils. Planted in such soil, it blooms brightly and profusely.

In the middle lane, the plant does not need shelter for the winter. However, in the northern regions, I recommend mulching the bushes with one of the materials:

  • sawdust;
  • peat;
  • straw.

Cover with spruce branches from above.

Garden carnation

In my area, I planted small, compact bushes of garden carnations, forming a curb along the path. This unpretentious plant blooms with bright burgundy, scarlet, white or two-colored petals, depending on the variety. They contrast beautifully with the narrow and long leaves of rich green color.

Carnation prefers a soil with low acidity and moderate watering. It is important not to overmoisten the soil in order to prevent decay of the root system.

Clefthoof

It attracted my attention with its large, as if leathery, dark green leaves. The perennial grows rapidly, even in partial shade, forming a thick carpet that does not lose its high decorative qualities until late autumn.

Landscape designers use the clefthoof to form curbs along paths and to close the root circles of fruit and ornamental trees.

I planted this perennial in places with thick shade. I planted it in moist soil, having previously used a small amount of limestone for planting.

Stone rose

Many people grow this plant at home. However, I decided to plant it to create an alpine slide, as it harmonizes perfectly with the saxifrage. The stone rose is a succulent that forms its dense, fleshy shoots in the shape of a flower.

In properly organized conditions, it grows quickly, forming a patterned carpet - it looks very impressive.

The plant prefers slightly moist, barren soil with a high sand content. With moderate fertilization, the leaves have a bright shade. If you overfeed the perennial, the plates will begin to fade.

Honeysuckle

A low-growing shrub that gives a bountiful harvest of tasty berries with a characteristic acidity. They are great for fresh consumption and making jam. In addition, the bush has high decorative qualities.

I have honeysuckle planted in the wettest areas, because it is unpretentious and feels great there.

To keep the plant beautiful as long as possible, I recommend watering it abundantly and periodically feeding it with organic and mineral compounds, which I apply strictly to the root.

So, there are a number of perennials that are unpretentious to growing conditions. Subject to the minimum agricultural technology, they retain their decorative qualities until the first frost. And some even in winter.
