Most garden crops are grown in seedlings. For the event to be successful, certain rules must be followed. However, there are some mistakes that not only beginners, but also experienced gardeners make. I would like to pay special attention to such.
Violation of the rules for storage of seed material
If the seeds do not germinate or lose their germination, this means only one thing - the storage rules have been violated.
I recommend following these conditions:
- Humidity is not more than 50%.
- Temperature - 10 °C.
The place for seed material should be dry, dark and well ventilated. I advise you to use paper or woven bags. Moisture accumulates in polyethylene, mold and rot appear.
Neglect of pre-sowing preparation
This is one of the most important factors that I recommend paying special attention to. If neglected, the seeds will have low germination, poor immunity to various diseases, and may die due to weather fluctuations.
I advise you to prepare as follows:
- Disinfect seeds. To do this, I soak them for 30 minutes in a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate. Then I dry it out a bit.
- germinate. I leave the planting material for 20 minutes in the Epin solution. Then I place it on a damp cloth in a warm place, for example, on a battery. I always keep the cloth damp. I wait until sprouts appear, and only then I plant them on seedlings. So I achieve quick and friendly shoots.
It is important to remember that too much preparation is just as harmful as not having it. For disinfection, it is enough to use only one solution and another one to stimulate seedlings. Soaking in several preparations and too long a treatment time will lead to the death of the planting material.
hardening
A procedure that will help strengthen the immunity of seedlings to various diseases. To do this, I keep the seeds for some time in a cool place and only then proceed to germination.
However, if sprouts have already appeared, I strongly do not advise resorting to hardening, since the seeds at this moment are extremely sensitive and may die.
To properly carry out the procedure, I recommend placing the planting material in a bag of thin fabric and soak for 6 hours in clean, cool water. Then let them dry for 12 hours and place in the refrigerator.
Violation of the terms of sowing
One of the most common mistakes not only among beginners, but also among experienced gardeners. Different crops have different timeframes for seedlings to emerge. If the procedure is carried out too early, the seedlings will stretch, become thin and fragile. After planting in open ground, it will hurt for a long time or die altogether.
Too late sowing will lead to the fact that the plants do not have time to take root in the garden and produce a crop.
I start sowing around mid-February, depending on the type of crop.
Improper soil preparation
Some gardeners use soil from the garden plot to plant seedlings. If the soil is not treated, then pests or bacteria can appear in it, which will destroy fragile plants or seeds.
I pre-calcined the earth in the oven at a temperature of 50 ° C for 2 hours. And only then do I start sowing.
