What is the difference between pruning in spring and pruning in autumn
In the spring, during pruning, it is necessary to rid the vine of stepchildren of the second order - they grow from buds in the axils of the leaves. They suck out nutrients from the vine and thicken the bush with their leaves, creating an extra shadow. Growers recommend giving the plant time to grow greens and only then remove the leaves in the stepchildren.
At the end of summer, pruning will take place according to a different scenario: the shoots of the tops must be broken off by a couple of tens of centimeters. Note that the procedure, which is called chasing, is forbidden to be done on diseased bushes, as well as during the dry period.
In autumn, it is better to prune the vine after two weeks after harvest, while simultaneously helping the plant shed its foliage.
How to properly prune a grapevine
- We cut the vine without affecting the areas with living wood - they are greenish in color.
- At least another centimeter of shoot should rise above the living kidney. It is also necessary to pay attention that the first three buds-eyes from the beginning of the base are infertile. The number of buds left on the shoot is calculated based on the average weight of the bunch (more 0.5 kg - it is allowed to leave a small number of eyes, if the weight is less - you can leave a lot kidneys).
