Onions and garlic are essential crops in my yard. Without them, it is impossible to cook either first courses or second courses. Sometimes they are present in desserts. It is not always possible to plan plantings in such a way that each crop is given an individual garden bed. Our six acres are not dimensionless, but we want to plant so many different vegetables and flowers that literally every piece is occupied with something. So onions and garlic are in close neighbors.
The value of neighborhood for plants
Every plant needs nutrients. Some take less of these elements from the soil, others need a large amount. I take these factors into account when selecting neighbors so that the planted plants do not act depressingly on each other, and the requirements for the content of nutrition in the soil and the level of moisture are approximately the same. It is also important to protect the neighbor from pests and diseases.
Can onions and garlic get along side by side?
If it is possible to breed these crops in different directions, you should not plant them side by side. What are the reasons for this:
- They belong to the same family of lilies, therefore, they suffer from the same diseases and will not be able to protect each other.
- These vegetables love the same lighting.
- The competition for food and moisture leads to the rapid depletion of the soil.
If the situation develops in such a way that it is impossible otherwise, then onions and garlic are planted nearby. Still, they have the same sowing time, and they ripen quickly.
Features of planting spring and winter crops
Spring
In the spring I loosen the land for planting, disinfect the soil with a solution of potassium permanganate. I prepare small pits for onions and garlic cloves. I put them in the soil and sprinkle with a small layer of earth. In the absence of rain, I water the plantings.
Winter crops
Landing in the fall I spend at the end of October. For this, I choose a site where melt water does not stagnate in spring. I am applying potassium and phosphorus fertilizers. For areas with frosty winters, I recommend covering the plantings with spruce branches.
Crop rotation
I plant onions and garlic every year in a new place. Their roots are small. After them, I plant crops with deep roots: cabbage, zucchini, tomatoes. I return the landing to its original place no earlier than after 3 years. This protects the soil from depletion.
Which neighbors are suitable for onions and garlic?
These vegetables are similar, but the neighbors are different for them. What do I plant next to onions? For him, the best neighbors are radishes, parsley, tomatoes, strawberries, salads. It grows well only on loose nutrient soil.
Garlic gets along well with potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, currants. Its influence is favorable for most crops, as it releases phytoncides that can repel pests and suppress the growth of pathogenic bacteria. After garlic, I usually plant strawberries (strawberries). Garlic kills pests that are dangerous for this crop, and the berries grow healthy, sweet, and large.
I do not plant onions and garlic one after another, as they have common enemies.
What can not be planted nearby?
For garlic, legumes are favorable as predecessors, but they cannot be planted nearby because of garlic phytoncides that inhibit these crops. The same reason does not allow planting eggplants and tomatoes in the neighboring garden.
Spicy and aromatic herbs containing essential oils, menthol, camphor are bad neighbors for garlic. They slow down the growth of this crop.
When planting onions and garlic in the same bed, I make additional nutrition and monitor the timely soil moisture so that the vegetables do not compete with each other for survival.
