Being engaged in growing cucumbers on my site for more than a year, I would like to share my observations with you. I can’t attribute this culture to particularly fastidious, minimal care is needed. It is enough to prepare the soil well and maintain optimal temperature and humidity. In a greenhouse, where there is an opportunity to control everything, there are more chances to get a rich harvest. However, there are some nuances.
Possible causes of poor growth of cucumbers in the greenhouse
1. Lack of minerals in the soil
Soil preparation for the season should be done in the fall. At the end of the season, the soil is dug up, weeds are removed with roots. Next, the greenhouse is treated from the inside with a solution of lime (300 g per 10 liters of water, leave for 3 hours). Then manure is brought into the ground, dug up again and left until spring.
A week before planting cucumbers in a greenhouse, mineral fertilizers must be applied to the ground: nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Nitrogen helps the active growth and development of the plant. The next top dressing is carried out at the beginning of flowering, adding an ash solution to mineral fertilizers. The remaining fertilizers (potassium nitrate, urea) are applied already during the fruiting of cucumbers.
During the formation of the ovaries, it is necessary to make foliar top dressing for cucumbers. For these purposes, a solution of 10 liters of water and 35 g of superphosphate is well suited.
2. Too little or too much moisture
I think everyone knows that cucumbers start to taste bitter from a lack of liquid, but its excess can do even more harm: rot will appear and culture diseases will arise.
Cucumbers should be watered no more than 1 time in two days with warm water 20–23 °.
3. Low air temperature
Cucumbers are a heat-loving plant that develops well at 20–26 °. It is much easier to achieve the desired air temperature in a greenhouse than in open ground. During night frosts, you can save heat with an electric heater.
4. Lack of pollination
This problem is especially relevant for a closed greenhouse, where there is no wind and insects. In such conditions, the plant needs help. Pollination can be done with a brush or fan.
5. Diseases and pests
The main cause of most cucumber diseases (root rot, powdery mildew, cladosporiosis) and the spread of pests is excess moisture. Most of them are treatable, but it is always easier to prevent the disease than to treat it. Ventilate the greenhouse more often. For the prevention of diseases and pests, you can use the funds "Terradox" and "Gliocladin".
In order for your cucumbers to grow healthy and please you with a good harvest, it is enough to be attentive to them: do not supercool and not overheat, water and fertilize in time, alternate mineral fertilizers with organic. Another important point - you should not grow one crop in the same place for several years in a row. The greenhouse after the end of the season must be treated with formalin or special means.
