Beijing cabbage in the beds - how to grow?

Beijing cabbage is quite picky. She does not sprout as well as her relatives, is difficult to transplant and requires a lot of attention. But with a little effort, you can achieve a high yield.

Before you start planting Beijing cabbage, you should know what it happens: early, mid-season, late. Depending on its type, landing dates are also selected.

I grow this vegetable crop in seedlings. I immediately plant the seeds in separate containers. Since when growing seedlings in one box when transplanting into open ground, its roots are damaged.

Where is the best place to plant?

When planting Beijing cabbage, I carefully choose a place. I plant early varieties in the shade. If they are planted in the sun, they will start releasing arrows ahead of time. And late varieties, so that they have time to ripen before frost, I plant in sunny places.

I recommend planting Chinese cabbage after:

  • peas;
  • beans;
  • potatoes;
  • beans
  • tomato;
  • celery.

But after radish, horseradish, mustard, I do not recommend planting it. Since these vegetable crops have the same diseases.

Features of planting cabbage

I have already noted before that I prefer the cultivation of Beijing cabbage seedlings. To do this, I use peat cups and plant 1 seed in them. So the plant will be easier to plant in open ground without disturbing its root system.

The land can be used for planting, both purchased and prepared from sand and turf 1: 1. When planting seedlings in open ground, I maintain a distance of 50 cm between rows, 30 cm between plants. Then the heads of cabbage are more powerful and large.

Ripening terms

Each individual type of cabbage has its own ripening time:

  • early varieties - 1.5 months;
  • average - 2 months;
  • late - 2.5 months.

I want to immediately note that early and medium cabbage is best eaten immediately. But late varieties can be left for the winter. Since they will be stored for six months.

Features of care

Care for Beijing cabbage should be thorough. Then she will please you with a high yield.

Watering

I always water the seedlings only with warm water. Since this plant is thermophilic and does not tolerate cold. In sunny and dry weather, I water the beds every three days. If the summer is rainy, you can water the plants once a week. But stagnation of water in the beds with cabbage should not be. Since this culture often suffers from root rot.

top dressing

Beijing cabbage loves well-fertilized soil. I plant it already in prepared and fertilized soil, and then feed it several times in the beds.

I recommend fertilizing Chinese cabbage with organic matter:

  • manure;
  • bird droppings;
  • wood ash.

Seedling dive

As noted earlier, Chinese cabbage has a negative attitude towards picking due to a weak root system. I plant it immediately in separate containers and plant it on beds with an earthen clod. I plant cabbage when 3 leaves appear on it.

How to plant for the winter?

You can plant cabbage not only in spring, but also in autumn (that is, in winter). For this, I use seeds of medium and late varieties. I sow the seeds in the ground with the onset of frost (so that they do not have time to germinate this year). I apply organic fertilizers to the soil before planting. After I cover the bed with a film and sprinkle it with earth.

As you can see, everyone can grow Beijing cabbage. Have you tried planting it in your garden? Perhaps you have some of your own secrets and tricks when growing Beijing cabbage. I invite you to discuss it in the comments below.
