Looking at photographs of Russian servicemen, you can see that on the chest of many of them, right on the bulletproof vest, a fastened carbine dangles. It is clear that not all military personnel belong to the honorary "family" of mountain shooters. And therefore, a logical question arises: why is an element of climbing equipment hanging on the chest? Not for beauty.
In fact, not only servicemen of the RF Armed Forces cling to bulletproof vests. This practice is widespread throughout the world and is associated with the problems of evacuation from the battlefield. Moreover, there is every reason to believe that the fashion for carbines was adopted from the American army, since it was she who the last quarter of the 20th and the first fifth of the 21st century fought the most and has long managed to become a "trendsetter" for armies other countries. However, it is possible that they came up with such a decision on their own, since it lies literally on the surface.
However, since 1980, the reformed US contract army has taken part in 18 armed conflicts and special operations. The Soviet Union and Russia have taken part in 17 armed conflicts and special operations since 1980, with 16 of them in the Russian Federation. At least two conflicts without active hostilities can be taken away from the list of Russia: this is a special operation in the Crimea in 2014 and an operation in Kazakhstan in 2022. In other words, the Russian army began to really actively gain combat experience only in recent years. 20 decades and the most striking experience since the wars in Chechnya for the Russian army was, of course, Syria.
So why do you need a carbine on body armor? In fact, everything is extremely simple. It is needed to evacuate the wounded with a rope. In itself, this "technology" is not something new. They saved wounded soldiers from the battlefield in this way back in the 20th century. Moreover, in Soviet times, MT-LB vehicles equipped with a winch were used to pull the wounded fighters out of the fire zone, if important. This method of evacuating soldiers is used in the post-Soviet space to this day.

Why not just carry a friend on your shoulders? First, it is often physically impossible. The shot person remains lying in the zone of fire. Any attempts to save him by "traditional" methods will only result in additional losses. In such conditions, even if one fighter gets close to a colleague, it will be damn difficult to pull him out, for example, lying down. Secondly, a person weighs a lot. A soldier in equipment weighs even more. To drag a person along the ground, for example, by grabbing the harness of a bulletproof vest, especially when weighted with equipment and weapons, is extremely difficult, even for a healthy, well-fed man from special forces. Not just like that, in all the armies of the world, it is for the removal of a wounded comrade that they often reward. It is also not always possible to load a friend on your shoulders. Therefore, a carbine with a winch is the safest and most successful solution, albeit not the most pleasant for the wounded. However, compared to the bleeding hole from 7.62, bumps and dirt are already little things in life.
