7 main Soviet buses that the whole country knew and loved

How many bus models were there in the Soviet Union? One, ten, one hundred? For a representative part of compatriots, there was no difference between Soviet buses. This is also due to the appearance. Serial samples of buses changed infrequently. In any case, that was the impression. In fact, dozens of mass-produced models of wheeled public transport were naturally produced in the USSR. It's time to remember the brightest of them.

1. ZiS-154 - the first post-war

The first serial post-war bus of the Soviet Union. Even if every inhabitant of the once common country did not ride it, at least he saw it on the TV screen or in the movies. The first prototype of the bus was born in 1946. 154s were produced until 1950, when they were replaced by younger and more advanced models. Of course, even after that, ZiS did not disappear from the roads and will continue to carry citizens for more than a decade. Interestingly, the surviving samples of the 154th today can literally be counted on the fingers of two hands.

2. ZIL-127 - the first intercity

The first Soviet real intercity bus. Developed in the early 1950s. The 127th went into production in 1955 and arrived on the assembly line until 1961. Interestingly, the production of the bus was quickly abandoned, not because it was bad. All the fault was the accession of the USSR to the international convention of road traffic. ZIS-127 violated it. And if no one would have banned the Union from using buses within the country, then there were already known problems with deliveries to the countries of the social bloc.

3. LAZ-699I - the first space

No, LAZ-699I did not fly into space. Nobody in the USSR had the desire to spend millions of rubles for the sake of launching an electric car into low Earth orbit. As for the LAZ-699I, it was this bus that was used on the launch pads of Soviet spaceports. It was he who drove the cosmonauts to Baikonur. In general, it was a fairly ordinary bus, albeit with a very unusual job ...

4. LAZ-4206 - generation of perestroika

Many believe that the USSR did not do anything nice. In fact, for their time, most Soviet buses were considered quite beautiful. A vivid example of this is LAZ-4206. It was designed already in the second half of the 1980s. Yes, today its appearance is hardly surprising, but just look at how much it differs from the models produced in the 1950s and 1960s. Alas, many good ideas in the USSR remained on the drawing table.

5. ZIS-155 - movie star

At one time, this bus replaced the 154th already mentioned at the very beginning. This car was a new stage in the development of the Soviet bus industry. However, the ZIS-155 was remembered not for its appearance or technical characteristics, but for the fact that it appeared much more often than other buses in Soviet cinema. Of course, all this is just a funny coincidence, and not some clever idea. However, thanks to this, the 155th was seen even where they were not delivered. The bus was produced from 1949 to 1957.

Just think: LiAZ-677 was mass-produced at the plant from 1967 to 1994. And individual piece copies of this miracle machine were produced until 2002! In total, only during the years of the USSR, about 200 thousand buses of this model were produced. Unlike many of the models already mentioned here, it was possible to meet the LiAZ-677 in absolutely every Soviet city or suburb. At the same time, over the decades of faithful service, the 667th, through the efforts of the designers, managed to acquire 9 serial modifications.

As already noted, for various reasons, many interesting developments in the Soviet Union did not leave either the drawing board or the testing ground. The clearest example of such a machine is LiAZ-5256.05. In fact, this is not even a bus, but a mobile cafe. Unfortunately, this “McDonald's on wheels” was never implemented.
