Last year I visited the Nizhny Novgorod region. Locals offered to show local landmark - the Shukhov Tower. I assumed that it is the same small tower in Vyksa (http://ammo1.livejournal.com/630993.html), But the tower was huge and very beautiful.

To get to the tower, we left the city, drove thirty kilometers, turned into some kind of holiday village, passed through him and into the woods. After a few kilometers on the road, we reached the banks of the Oka River. Through the branches of the trees seemed to something big.

In 1927-1929 under the project and under the leadership of Vladimir Shukhov near Nizhny Novgorod six hyperboloid towers height of 128, 68 and 20 meters were built, which served as transmission towers NiGRES ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Шуховская_башня_на_Оке. Two 128-meter towers were standing on the bank of the Oka and needed to move power lines across the river to the opposite high bank.

After changing the transmission line route four towers dismantled. In 2005, one of the two large remaining towers destroyed Vandals and surrendered for scrap. Vandals from the second tower 16 had cut-profile steel girders of the lower section and two steel base ring. Tower survived, based on the remaining 30 base profiles. In 2008, it was restored stolen beams, built fencing and the tower was put in charge of security guard.

Tower on the Oka River is considered to be the most perfect and beautiful of the Shukhov's towers.

It is only 20 meters below the Shukhov Tower on Shabolovka.

Unfortunately, the photos do not convey all the grandeur and beauty of design. This is the case when what you see is breathtaking.

The tower is quite long and hard to get, so few have seen it with my own eyes. I was lucky.

p.s. Vladimir G. Shukhov (ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Шухов, _Vladimir_Grigorevich) Invented hyperboloidal structure (ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Гиперболоидные_конструкции) In the late 19th century and received a patent on them in 1896. According to his projects were built hundreds of buildings, including the roof of GUM and the Kiev railway station in Moscow. Shukhov Tower is not only in Russia. Hyperboloidal tower built in Japan (Kobe port) in the Czech Republic (the tower "Ještěd"), in Switzerland (Zurich). The biggest, 600-meter mesh hyperboloid Shukhov Tower was built in 2010 in Guangzhou in China.

Upd.: Tower on the Oka easily found in Yandex maps for the search query "Shukhov Tower on the Oka River". There also is a panoramic photo of the tower and the area around: Link, a here in the woods seen the concrete foundation of one of the small Shukhov's towers.
