Improper care is the reason for the yellowing of the foliage of shrubs

Taking preventive measures, in order to combat yellowed foliage, you must first determine why the leaves of currants and gooseberries turn yellow.

If in the spring-summer time the leaves of currants and gooseberries began to turn yellow rapidly, it means that the berry plantings do not have enough moisture. This occurs most often in hot and dry weather.

To eliminate the moisture deficit, it is recommended to establish watering, at a stable normal air temperature, 3 times during the season are enough:

  • with active growth of greenery, the formation of ovaries;
  • when fruits ripen;
  • during the laying of new kidneys.

When the temperature rises for a long time, additional watering is required.

Gooseberries, unlike currants, are more tolerant of arid conditions.

It is recommended to water it with warm water under the root, about 2 buckets per plant.

Lack of nitrogen fertilizers in the soil is the reason for the yellowing of the leaves. Nitrogen is responsible for vegetative weight gain and photosynthesis. Also, the lack of a substance entails oxygen starvation of the plant, and therefore its growth slows down, the foliage dims, turns yellow and crumbles.

Nitrogen-containing fertilizers are applied with the onset of spring, in the summer they are embedded under the soil, drugs such as ammonium nitrate, urea, carbamide, sulfate and ammonium sulfate are used.

Diseases and pests - as the cause of yellowing of the foliage of shrubs

With the emerging diseases, from which currants and gooseberries suffer, it is much more difficult to fight.

Diseases that provoke the appearance of yellowness on foliage include:

  • Rust is a fungal infection that appears on the underside of the leaf in spots or in the form of reddish "warts".
  • Verticillary wilting - with this disease, the roots are affected, because of this, the plant does not receive moisture and nutrients. As a result, the foliage turns yellow and the bush dies.
  • Anthracnose is a fungal infection, manifested by brownish spots of a rounded shape, gradually small spots grow and merge into one large spot. Such a lesion contributes to a decrease in winter hardiness and yield.
  • Mosaic is a viral disease that manifests itself on the leaves in the form of yellow spots with a greenish dot in the center, the foliage turns yellow and dries up.
The appearance of pests can also cause the leaves to turn yellow. Illustration for this article is used under a standard license © ofazende.com

It is impossible to completely cure the shrub from the above diseases, therefore, preventive measures should be started in time, such as:

  • autumn cleaning in the area of foliage and litter from other plants;
  • acquisition of resistant varieties;
  • preventive treatment of shrubs;
  • removal of withered and yellow leaves;
  • the use of fungicides;
  • elimination of damaged plantings.
The appearance of pests can also cause the leaves to turn yellow. The spider mite feeds on nutrients from the leaves, its appearance is evidenced by spider nests on the tops of the branches, most often the plant suffers from a tick during a dry period.

Aphids are able to suck out all the juice from the bush, the larva and the adult are dangerous, they live on the plant in colonies, swelling on the foliage on the upper side indicates the appearance of aphids.

Currant glassware affects not only currants, but also gooseberries. The most dangerous is glass in the stage of a caterpillar, gnawing shoots, which contributes to a violation of the nutrition of the foliage, as a result of which the foliage turns yellow, the bush may die.

Possible ways to control pests:

  • cleaning and burning of fallen leaves;
  • loosening the soil around the bush and mulching;
  • removal of weak, affected stems along with pests;
  • preventive treatment of bushes and plantings.

For full growth, development of currant and gooseberry bushes, care is needed. Compliance with the rules of planting, feeding, preventive measures is the key to a good harvest.
