General rules and recommendations

Experienced flower growers recommend adhering to the following recommendations when caring for rose bushes in autumn:

  • Don't rush into cover. The appearance of the first frost is not a reason to immediately cover the plants. Roses are distinguished by good resistance to negative temperatures and are not afraid of short-term frosts.
  • Do not bend the shoots in cold weather with severe frosts. Otherwise, the shoots will become brittle and the bark will crack. As a result, the plant will become vulnerable to infection. Therefore, it is better to complete this work in early autumn, bending large branches in a bundle in several stages.

  • Do not prune young branches. In warm conditions, premature pruning will lead to increased formation of new shoots. Cuts on thin branches after trimming work are processed with brilliant green, and on thick ones - with a solution of garden varnish.
  • Do not use natural fiber rope to tie the bush. Such material absorbs moisture and rots. Therefore, it is better to replace it with polypropylene twine.
  • Don't leave leaves on the stems, even if they look healthy. The green parts accumulate infections and viruses.
  • Do not huddle bushes in wet weather and high soil moisture: this will be ineffective. Hilling can be done only in dry weather with light frost and dry soil. You should also pay special attention to the preparation of soil mixture for hilling.
  • Do not scoop up fallen leaves into bushes. Dry leaves are not suitable for hilling rose bushes.

Top dressing

In order for the plant to overwinter normally and then bloom profusely, special nutrients should be added to the soil. Preparations based on phosphorus and potassium are suitable for autumn processing, which increase the resistance of flowers to infections and low temperatures, and contribute to a more intensive development of wood. Potassium is an indispensable component for a rose. It is better to refuse the introduction of nitrogen-containing preparations, since they stimulate the formation of green mass and prevent the normal preparation of the bushes for a cold snap.

In case of prolonged precipitation, it is allowed to feed 2 times:

  • Late August - early September.
  • In October.

Florists use different methods of nutrient introduction. Someone dilutes them with liquid and uses them for root and foliar processing. Someone sprinkles granules around the perimeter of the site or embeds them in the soil. You can also retreat 15 cm from the main shoot and form an annular furrow, where the mixture of chernozem soil and top dressing will submerge. In this case, the saturation of roses with the necessary components will be carried out in several stages.

Foliar top dressing of roses in autumn contributes to the rapid saturation of the soil without changing its composition. For such treatment, a composition of 50 g of superphosphate dissolved in 1 liter of hot water is used. Then the solution is diluted with another 10 liters of water and used for spraying.

You can spray the bushes with a homemade preparation based on wood ash. For this foliar feeding, you will need to prepare 200 g of ash and 10 liters of water.

If fertilizers are applied at the root, then it is better to use complex formulations in granular or liquid form. They increase the cold resistance of plants and strengthen the protective functions of the immune system.

Proper care of roses in the fall involves not only feeding, but also pruning, hilling and preventive measures to protect bushes from diseases and pests.
