Good afternoon, my reader. Gardeners regularly face adverse weather conditions that can cause a lot of trouble. In winter, saving plants is much more difficult: the snow breaks branches with its own weight, thereby spoiling not only the appearance, but also the health of the seedlings. However, adverse outcomes can be avoided if you properly prepare your site.

Shaking off the trees

In almost every area there are trees and bushes that have suffered from the snow masses that have accumulated on their fragile branches. Responsible summer residents prepare in advance for the winter season by installing shelters on solid frames over fragile plants or pulling branches with rope and ribbons. But not every gardener makes these fall preparations.

So what can you do to minimize damage from bad weather? Rather shake off the snow from the trees. However, this must be done correctly:

  • shake off snow from the branches with a soft brush with a long handle. If there is none, then wrap the end of the stick with a cloth and shake it off;
  • no need to knock on wood: soft touches are enough;
  • you need to throw snow from the branches from the bottom up: if you start from the upper ones, then under the mass of falling snow, the lower ones can break;
  • do not clear the snow from the tree if the air temperature drops to –10 C - this can injure the branches;
  • if the bush or tree is not tall, then you can collect the snow around the plant in a heap so that the branches lay on the snowdrift.

Sanitary pruning

Sometimes autumn measures are useless and the garden suffers from the elements of the weather. Unfortunately, broken branches will not grow back together even if they are tied securely.

Broken branches should be carefully cut with a sharp pruner or hacksaw. The saw cut must be disinfected and lubricated with garden varnish. At the end, you need to wrap the branch with burlap.

In no case should you prune branches in cold weather. At -10 C, they become brittle and can be severely damaged by pruning.

If the trunk is broken, then first of all you need to understand how old the broken tree is. Old fruit trees are usually useless to heal. You should completely cut them down, and in the warm season, uproot the stump. If the tree is young and strong, then you need to cut the trunk a little below the break, process it in the same way as the branches, and wait for spring. In the warm season, new buds will wake up, from which young branches from the trunk will begin to grow.

Roof cleaning

If there are structures and sheds next to the garden trees, then it is imperative to clean the snow from their roofs. Accumulating, large volumes of snow can roll down from the roof onto trees and bushes, breaking not only branches, but also trunks.

If there is a polycarbonate greenhouse on the site, then snow removal from its roof is mandatory - snow can crush or even break the surface.
