The main types of tomatoes
There are a lot of varieties of tomatoes with a wide variety of characteristics. An overview of tomato varieties for the 2020 season is quite difficult to do, because it will take a long time to describe each specimen popular among gardeners. Some of them are better, some are worse, but it is necessary to choose the type of plants adapted to growth in these conditions.
Another criterion influencing the choice of the cultivated variety is its productivity. It is this indicator that determines the level of the harvest. When choosing one type or another, attention is paid to whether it is intended for planting in open ground or a greenhouse. First of all, it is worth considering the features of specimens intended for placement outside the greenhouse.
The choice of seedlings depending on the timing of ripening
According to the time required to complete ripening, all tomatoes are divided into:
- ultra early ripening;
- early maturing;
- mid-early;
- mid-season;
- late ripening.
Ultra-ripe fruits ripen in just 85 days. The taste is slightly sour due to the low sugar content. The fruits are not suitable for preservation. This group includes Little Red Riding Hood, Pride of Russia, Valentina, Marisha, Maksimka.
Early maturing can be removed from the bush after 90-95 days. The fruits of these varieties are small in size. The productivity of this variety is average. They are suitable for processing and use in salads. We are talking about tomatoes with the names Riddle, Agatha, Augustine.
Mid-early - it takes about 103 days for these varieties to ripen. Fruits are universal, cultivated for preservation and salads. This group includes tomatoes bearing the names Azhur, Russian soul, Cardinal, Flamingo.
Mid-ripening ripens approximately 115 days after planting. These include tall and undersized varieties. The yield is large enough, they have excellent taste. This group includes tomatoes Scarlet candles, Baskets, Intuition, Black Baron.
Late-ripening varieties take about 130 days to ripen. Representatives of these varieties taste great. They are well stored and transported. Tomatoes are versatile. Caring for them is quite difficult. But it is these varieties that can reach the largest sizes. Very often, record holders grow on a branch. Representatives of this group are the Cosmonaut, Giraffe, Titan, Rio obtained by selection.
In specialized stores, summer residents can be offered plant options, divided not only by ripening periods, but also by climatic zones.
There are tomatoes bred specifically for planting in the Moscow region, southern regions of Siberia, the Urals and the Far North. Each of the tomatoes offered for planting has properties that are necessary for survival in this particular climate.
Tomato varieties and diseases
Low temperature and high moisture content in the air contribute to the development of various diseases that can reduce the volume of tomato harvest or even destroy plants. Therefore, it is very often necessary to choose varieties that can withstand certain types of infections. These varieties include Geisha, Betta, Blitz, Koenigsberg.
But even the planting of these varieties does not give a complete guarantee that the fungi will not infect the plants. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of seedlings, and then of adult plants. Carry out timely processing of tomatoes using chemistry.
The specimens intended for greenhouses are also very diverse. They are great for canning and salads. The peculiarity of these varieties is that they give a harvest all year round. It is believed that tall tomatoes are best suited for greenhouses. In practice, this is not entirely true. Low-growing tomatoes also bear fruit well in greenhouses.
The hybrids also showed themselves well. They give a stable harvest in open field and greenhouse conditions. Intuition F1, Katya F1 were recognized as the best among them. Most of them are unpretentious. There are specimens with early ripening and late fruiting plants.
