Bowie: the US knife with the strongest slash

The Bowie Knife is one of the most famous knives in the world. Introduced in the 19th century during the war, this instrument quickly became a favorite of soldiers and hunters. And the point here is not only that he looks cool and pretentious. First of all, the knife was loved, of course, for its utilitarian qualities. Bowie actually has the strongest slash among his fellows, which is very useful in a variety of situations.

Bowie's knife owes its appearance to the inventor and rather controversial personality - James "Jimmy" Bowie. A native of Kentucky, he lived for a long time in Louisiana, engaged in the slave trade and agriculture. In 1827, he had a conflict with the local sheriff. As a result of the disassembly, Bowie received a gunshot wound, after which he stabbed the sheriff with a knife of his own production, which was the prototype of the famous blade. Fearing bounty hunters, Bowie was forced to leave the United States for Texas, then part of Mexico.

In 1930, Bowie refined his knife with a sheared blade, resulting in the very weapon that every knife lover knows today. The popularity of the product came in the middle of the same decade, when the Texas Revolution broke out in 1935 - the struggle of the future state for independence from Mexico. Bowie himself took an active part in the conflict, leading a pro-American group. Today he is considered one of the heroes of that war.

After the Texas War, the popularity of the Bowie knife began to skyrocket among the soldiers, as well as among hunters, prospectors and even farmers. Largely due to the fact that, due to the specifics of its design, it made it possible to deliver powerful cutting and chopping blows even with minimal effort. This, in turn, made Bowie's knife, on the one hand, a monstrous weapon, and on the other, a solid household tool.

Typically, Bowie has a blade length of 230 to 380 mm and a width of 38 to 50 mm. Without fail, the tool must be equipped with a guard made of copper or iron and have a single-edge sharpening. The handle is made of wood or bone. There are no strict requirements for the pommel, so it can be generally anything. The best knives are traditionally forged in private workshops in the southern states of the United States.
