Have you ever considered a plug from an outlet? Surely everyone at least once paid attention to the fact that (with a high degree of probability) there is some kind of mysterious hole in it. What is it for? What functions does it perform? In most cases, people do not try to find the answer to all of these questions. Meanwhile, this piece of fork construction is incredibly important.

In electronics, nothing is done just for fun or for beauty. If there is something in the equipment design, then it has some kind of utilitarian purpose. One of these mysterious elements is the hole on the plug of the euro socket between the contact pieces. It is noteworthy that in our country this structural element is far from always involved, however in most European countries it works to its fullest. This recess is required for the conductive pin that sticks out of the socket.

What exactly is an extra pair of male-female contacts in a European-style socket needed for? The answer is extremely simple - for grounding. Without them, working with an outlet would be even less safe. And here all those who live in the territory of the former USSR should ask a question: why is there a hole in a number of plugs, but there is no plug for it in the socket? The fact is that in equipment used in Russia and a number of neighboring countries, grounding is carried out not through an additional plug, but through a pair of metal tabs.

It is noteworthy that the sockets used today, in fact, appeared back in the 1920s. The plug connection was invented even earlier in 1904. Its creator is engineer Harvey Hubbell. It is quite ironic that they did not want to implement the design proposed by the master for a long time. They refused to support Hubbell financially, and when the money was found, the First World War broke out. As a result, the introduction of plug-and-socket connections in electronics took almost 15 years.
