In this material, I want to describe several more ways to use egg trays in a country house. We will only talk about products made of pure cardboard without stickers, pictures and plastic inserts. We will use only natural cellulose for the vegetable garden.

Cardboard trays will make an excellent smoker for scaring away mosquitoes and midges. To do this, you need to choose a calm place, take a metal bowl and set fire to several cut cells in it. A flaming flame should be immediately extinguished by tightly covering the container for a few seconds. As soon as you lift the lid, smoke will immediately pour out of the bowl. It will be an excellent protection against annoying insects. Trays smolder for a long time, so you will have to add fuel no more than once every half an hour.

In addition to creating a homemade smoker, egg trays will work as fuel for a smoker. Together with the chips, the cut cells will smolder for a long time, while emitting a decent amount of smoke.

Cardboard trays do not contain toxic substances, so they can be safely used for fumigation from harmful insects.

2. Basis for planting seeds

Cardboard trays without labels or stickers can be used for planting seeds. To do this, you need to dig a small depression in the garden bed, place cells with seed in it and dig in with a thin layer of soil. The decaying cardboard will generate heat, saturating the earth with cellulose. By the time the plant root system reaches the walls of the tray, the cardboard will be too soft to become a tangible obstacle.

This way you can plant onions, carrots, beets and some other garden crops. The distance between the grooves in the tray allows you to avoid thinning, since each plant is in a separate cell. In addition, in the first weeks after sowing, the cardboard will protect the seedlings from the majority of the weeds.

3. Storage for tulip bulbs

Egg trays are excellent storage for dug up tulip bulbs. In addition to universal availability, they have a number of significant advantages.

  1. It is easy to mark the cardboard with a marker. If necessary, you can sign at least every bulb;
  2. The trays are easy to store stacked on top of each other. The number of tiers is practically unlimited;
  3. Each bulb has a separate cell, which greatly reduces the risk of spreading diseases;
  4. The matrix structure of the trays allows you to sort the bulbs by varieties, sizes and any other characteristics;
  5. The cardboard from which the trays are made absorbs excess moisture well. This reduces the risk of rotting and the spread of fungi;
  6. The space between the trays stacked on top of each other is more than enough for air circulation;
  7. The bulbs in the cells are clearly visible from all sides. This allows you to select and discard spoiled copies in time.

Once the bulbs have been stored, the trays can be used for composting or mulching.
