Like many other gardeners, I plant winter garlic every year. This is the only crop that must be planted before winter. I can skip onions, radishes, dill and lettuce, but never garlic. I really love this culture.

My site is located in the Leningrad region on the site of a drained swamp. Fifty years ago, when plots were handed out, few people thought about drainage and soil fertility. The result was regular problems with excessive soil moisture and difficulties in planting winter crops. In particular, garlic suffers greatly.

Being in moist soil for a long time, the cloves begin to rot. The germination capacity of the material decreases, as a result of which the lion's share of the crop is lost. To prevent this from happening, I add nutrient-drainage mixture to the wells. It is very simple to prepare it. This will require generally available natural ingredients.

To prevent water from standing around the clove for a long time after the rain, coarse sand should be poured into the hole. It will act as a drain that will separate moisture from the seed and provide air exchange.

Using such a baking powder will solve the problem of prolonged moisture stagnation, but will deprive the clove of access to nutrients. To maintain germination, the sand must be mixed with wood ash and rotted compost in a ratio of 4: 1: 1. I selected the ratio of materials myself, so it can be changed depending on the prevailing conditions.

The nutrient-drainage mixture is poured into the bottom of the hole, after which a small depression is made in it for the clove. There should be at least 0.7 cm of the mixture in depth and 0.4 cm on the sides between the ground and the garlic.

This planting method will allow the cloves to avoid decay and take root favorably.
